Is your body really as young as you feel, or older than your birthday says? We brought in an expert to explain how triathlon training can impact your biological age - and what that might mean for longevity.

Sister Madonna Buder is a Catholic nun in Spokane, Washington.

At 48, a priest suggested running as a way of harmonising mind, body and spirit. She borrowed some kit and went out.

She ran her first marathon at 52.

She entered her first triathlon at 52 as well, and her first Ironman at 55 — which is to say she took up one of the hardest endurance events in existence at an age when most people are considering giving up squash.

She has since completed something in the region of 45 Ironman-distance races.

In 2012, at 82, she became the oldest woman ever to finish an Ironman triathlon, at Ironman Canada, within the cut-off.

She trains by running to Mass. She has broken bones repeatedly and gone back.

Her rule about age is simple: she does not think of the number, because the moment you accept a limit you have set one.

She is known in triathlon as the Iron Nun.

She started at 48 because a priest suggested it.

After a 22.52 in the semifinals, Noè Ponti entered the 50m butterfly final as one of the names expected to fight for a medal.

But in a race decided by hundredths, everything can change in an instant.

His goggles came off during the final, disrupting his race and leaving him 8th when the medals were on the line.

Ponti is a world record holder, an Olympic medalist, and one of the best butterfly swimmers of his generation — and maybe that’s exactly what makes this moment worth remembering.

At the highest level of sport, preparation can be nearly perfect. The outcome never is guaranteed.

Sometimes the smallest unexpected detail can change an entire race.

Even the best in the world aren’t immune to moments like this. That’s the beauty — and the cruelty — of racing.
