Before, we always had the "we're not tall enough" and "not athletic enough" excuses. Other national teams have shown that those aren't necessarily required anymore. We even have the tallest and most athletic pool of national team players in our history now, but we still aren't getting the success we hope for.

Our brand of basketball is stuck in the 90's and held back by corporate machismo and inflated egos.

“Is the Philippines still a ‘basketball country’?”

For decades, basketball has been deeply rooted in Filipino culture—from barangay courts and school leagues to the PBA and international competition. But when it comes to recent global sporting success, some of the Philippines’ biggest breakthroughs have increasingly come from weightlifting, gymnastics, pole vault, boxing, tennis, and other individual sports.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has not returned to the men’s Olympic basketball tournament since 1972, despite basketball remaining one of the country’s most popular and heavily followed sports.

That does not mean Filipinos have stopped loving basketball. Rather, it raises a bigger question: Should being a “basketball country” be defined by popularity alone—or by international results as well?

As more Filipino athletes achieve world-class success across different disciplines, perhaps Philippine sports identity is becoming much broader than basketball.

Maybe the Philippines is not becoming less of a basketball country—it is becoming more of a multi-sport nation. 🇵🇭

NEWS | The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center is asking IT communities to help the government deal with school violence, following the September 18 shooting in South Cotabato. Officials have said the case may be linked to the dark web, though the exact scale of that link is still being worked out.

CICC head Aboy Paraiso has said the government does not have all the skills it needs for cases like this. In the past, cases like this stayed inside government, handled only by government staff and tools. Now CICC wants outside help from IT and tech groups to trace what happened online before the attack. It is still not clear what kind of help is needed, or how volunteers would be checked and trusted.

A government agency just admitted, in public, that it can't do this alone. That's a rare moment. At BetterGov, we're open to support and willing to help where we can. If you work in cybersecurity, IT, or digital forensics, what should the government be asking the tech community to actually do, and why hasn't it built this capacity already?
