Emma Heming Willis wrote a sentence in her new book that no spouse ever wants to have to write: "We will donate Bruce's brain to science after his death."

Bruce Willis, 71, was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, a condition affecting language and communication that led him to step away from acting. The following year, doctors gave the family a fuller, harder picture: frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, a progressive brain disorder that primarily affects language, behavior, and personality. It remains the most common form of dementia among adults under 60, and there is currently no cure.

In her book, Emma revealed that the family has decided that once Bruce eventually passes, his brain will be donated for FTD research. The decision wasn't made lightly, or quickly. It came after months of watching someone physically healthy, still able to move and walk, while the disease steadily took away his language, his reading, and his independence. Emma has described the choice as emotionally difficult but scientifically necessary. His ex-wife Demi Moore and his five daughters, Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel, and Evelyn, have united behind the decision alongside her.

Dr. Bruce Miller, director of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, has long emphasized why donations like this matter so much for diseases like FTD. Brain tissue lets researchers examine cellular-level changes that scans and clinical observation simply can't capture on their own, information considered essential for improving diagnosis and eventually developing real treatments.

Emma has continued turning her family's experience into public advocacy in the meantime, launching the Emma & Bruce Willis Frontotemporal Dementia Research and Caregiver Support Fund, aimed at accelerating research while also supporting the families and caregivers navigating the same diagnosis right now, not waiting for some future breakthrough to help them.

It's worth being clear about where things actually stand. Bruce Willis is alive today, requiring round-the-clock care as his condition continues to progress, but there have been no reports of imminent decline. This is a plan the family has made for the future, shared now as part of Emma's broader effort to keep FTD in the public conversation while there's still time for it to matter to other families facing the same disease.

For a family already living through one of the hardest versions of this diagnosis, choosing to turn it into something that might spare other families the same uncertainty says something about what they're hoping his legacy includes.
