Zohaib Miandad, a young and determined mountaineer from Nomel in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Gilgit district, has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully summiting the 7,027-metre-high Spantik Peak, bringing pride to his hometown and the entire region.Miandad conquered the challenging Spantik Peak through determination, courage and relentless effort. His achievement reflects the growing interest among the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan in mountaineering and their determination to conquer some of the world’s most challenging mountain peaks.Speaking about his achievement, Zohaib Miandad said he dedicated his successful Spantik expedition to the memory of late Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi and to raising awareness about climate change. He said mountains were not merely destinations for adventure and mountaineering but also valuable natural assets that sustain the region’s fragile environment, glaciers and future generations. He stressed that protecting these natural resources was a collective responsibility.Miandad also expressed his determination to play a practical role in cleaning waste from the high-altitude mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan in future. He said waste left behind by mountaineers was increasingly threatening the natural environment and glaciers, potentially aggravating the impacts of climate change. He emphasized that his goal was not limited to summiting high peaks. He also wanted to promote the protection of the mountain environment, conservation of glaciers and greater awareness of climate change, while sending a positive message to the world from Gilgit-Baltistan.People from Nomel and other parts of the region, along with members of the mountaineering community, have congratulated Zohaib Miandad on his achievement and expressed hope that he will continue to bring recognition to Gilgit-Baltistan by conquering more challenging peaks in the future.
