India Expands Defence Modernisation as Border Security and China Factor Stay Central
India has continued to place national security at the center of its strategic planning, with defence spending and border-related capital investment remaining major priorities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The Indian government allocated ₹7.85 lakh crore to the Ministry of Defence in the 2026–27 Union Budget, describing it as the highest-ever allocation and a 15.19% increase over the previous budget estimate. A substantial portion, ₹1.39 lakh crore, has been earmarked for procurement from domestic defence industries.
This defence push reflects India’s broader effort to strengthen long-term military readiness in a region shaped by strategic competition, especially with China. Although India and China agreed in September 2024 to intensify efforts toward complete disengagement along the disputed Himalayan frontier, the border issue remains unresolved and strategically sensitive.
India’s current approach also aligns with its longer-running emphasis on border infrastructure and defence preparedness in response to China’s military and transport buildup near contested areas. Reuters had earlier reported that Modi’s security team viewed rapid expansion of border infrastructure as a priority in light of both Pakistan and China.
Another major element of India’s security posture is self-reliance in defense production. Official Indian government factsheets state that defense production reached a record ₹1.50 lakh crore in 2024–25, while defense exports rose to ₹23,622 crore, highlighting New Delhi’s effort to build a more autonomous and globally competitive defense sector under its Atmanirbharta policy.
India is also linking national security with technological modernization. The government has promoted the IndiaAI Mission as part of a broader effort to build an inclusive AI ecosystem aligned with national development goals, while the Ministry of Defense has released a draft Defense Acquisition Procedure 2026, signaling continued reform in military procurement and modernization systems.
For CSS aspirants, this development is important because it connects several examination themes at once: India’s defense doctrine, South Asian strategic stability, China–India rivalry, military modernization, and the growing role of technology in security policy. It also has relevance for Pakistan Affairs, since changes in India’s military capability and border posture directly affect the regional balance of power.
