On September 21, 1452, Girolamo Savonarola was born — a Dominican friar, preacher, and one of the most famous reformers of the Renaissance.

He called Florence to moral renewal, denounced the corruption of the Church and the Medici, and for a brief time even ruled the city in the spirit of a harsh “republic of virtue.” It ended at the stake in 1498.

September 17, 1939.

Poland had already been fighting for 17 days against the German assault from the west. On that day the Red Army struck from the east.
This was not a “liberation march.” It was a second invasion, agreed in advance in the secret protocol of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. The USSR and the Third Reich divided the Second Polish Republic between themselves. Poland was attacked from two sides, and its allies — France and Great Britain — did not enter a real war in its defense.

The photograph captures the atmosphere of those days: a meeting of German and Soviet officers. Not Poland’s allies. Co-participants in the partition.
The consequences came quickly: Katyń, deportations, the Gulag, the Sovietization of the Eastern Borderlands, and then decades of the lie that September 17 was “help from a brotherly nation.”

Today it is worth remembering one thing: Poland in September 1939 did not lose because it “didn’t fight.” It lost because it was attacked by two neighbors at once.
