Seychelles’ First Female Fisheries Entrepreneurs Graduate
In the heart of the Blue Economy, a quiet revolution has been brewing. On March 6, 2026, just days before International Women’s Day, 23 trailblazing women stood tall at their graduation ceremony, marking the completion of the first cohort of the Fisheries Business Management Course.
This was not just a certificate handover; it was the culmination of a rigorous six-month journey designed to transform artisanal fishing from a subsistence activity into a sophisticated, female-led industry.
A Journey of Resilience
The program began with 32 eager participants, but the path to professionalizing fish processing is demanding. By the final hurdle, 23 women remained—a group of iron ladies who proved that the fisheries sector is no longer an exclusively male domain.
The curriculum, sponsored by SeyCCAT and spearheaded by Bars & Tones Production in collaboration with AWFISHNET Seychelles, was far from traditional. Led by Chairperson Betty Mondon—who uniquely balanced the roles of program facilitator and fellow trainee—the cohort dived into a multi-disciplinary world. They mastered:
• Business Essentials: Finance, sales, marketing, and entrepreneurship.
• Technical Expertise: Aquaculture, fisheries science, and sustainable practices.
• Hands-on Fieldwork: From actual fishing trips and marketing analysis tours to intensive fish processing sessions.
