Sierra Leone Bans Community and School Football Competitions in Western Area After Deadly Violence
The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority have imposed an immediate ban on all community and school football competitions in the Western Area, citing a recent surge in youth violence and hooliganism that has claimed lives and destroyed property.
The decision, announced in a press release dated 17 September 2026 and signed by Minister of Sports Augusta James-Teima, followed a stakeholders’ meeting held the previous day at the Office of National Security. National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker convened the meeting to address unrest linked to football activities.
Authorities pointed to incidents involving supporters in competitions organised by the Central One Football Association (COFA). Violence between rival communities has escalated into clashes that resulted in at least one death and damage estimated in the millions of leones. One recent case involved unrest after a match at Parade Field that spilled into Kroo Town Road.
“Football and sports are generally regarded as unifying activities, but some communities and youths are using the beautiful game to cause security unrest and disrupt the normal daily activities of innocent citizens,” the ministry stated. Officials condemned the violence and said they would not allow football to threaten national peace and security.
Under the directive:
1. All community and school football competitions in the Western Area are suspended until further notice.
2. Organisers must comply or face legal penalties.
3. Security agencies will enforce the ban.
4. A technical committee of stakeholders will review regulations and guidelines before any lift of the restriction.
Casual recreational games among friends are not included in the ban. The ministry urged the public to prioritise peace, unity and national security.
The measure applies only to the Western Area, which includes Freetown, and does not affect official professional or national-team competitions.

61 Cast, 71 Counted: Ballot Discrepancy Clouds APC Kabala Election
A 10-ballot discrepancy has emerged in the All People’s Congress (APC) Constituency 044 election in Kabala, Koinadugu District, after 61 ballots were reportedly cast but 71 were counted during the counting process.
The election was initially scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the APC party office but was delayed for several hours following disagreements between two factions, locally referred to as the “Bike” and “House” camps.
The Sierra Leone Police and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces were deployed to maintain peace and order before voting eventually commenced in the afternoon. The process was conducted under the supervision of security personnel, media representatives and the APC Internal Election Management Committee.
According to figures presented during the election, 64 delegates were expected to vote, with 61 ballots reportedly cast. However, the subsequent count reportedly produced 71 ballots, leaving a difference of 10 ballots.
The discrepancy has raised questions about the counting process, with clarification from the election management committee expected to establish how the additional ballots were recorded. The committee is headed by Umaru Jogor Barrie.

Addressing supporters and well-wishers yesterday at Wusum Field in Makeni, Former President Koroma said he's ready to be a father figure to all, adding that should APC or SLPP need his advice on anything he's willing to provide it.
He further stressed the significance of peace and national cohesion in the country.
"You will not be able to participate in any peace process if your heart is filled with hatred," Former President Koroma said.
