Sierra Leone to Receive First Group of ECOWAS Deportees from U.S. this week

Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba has confirmed Sierra Leone has reached an agreement with the United States to accept hundreds of deported migrants from West Africa.

The first group of 25 nationals from Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, and Nigeria is expected to arrive in Sierra Leone on May 20, Kabba told Reuters. Under the deal, the country will take in up to 300 ECOWAS citizens per year from the United States, with a monthly cap of 25.

The arrangement forms part of the Trump administration’s efforts to speed up deportations by sending individuals to third countries when their home nations are unwilling or unable to accept them.

This latest pact mirrors a similar agreement with Ghana, restricting Sierra Leone’s acceptance to nationals of ECOWAS member states. The United States has struck comparable deals with several other African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Eswatini. These transfers have faced criticism from legal experts and human rights organisations, who have raised concerns about their legal foundation and the safety and treatment of deportees in nations where they hold no citizenship.

Previous Reuters reporting has shown that some individuals sent to Ghana and other African countries under such schemes were later returned to their countries of origin, even after obtaining court protection in the US designed to prevent their removal.

This index is of high concern for the state of journalism and press freedom.

Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) is deeply concerned by the latest World Press Freedom Index, which shows Sierra Leone has dropped 23 places in global rankings, now standing at 79 out of 180 countries. This marks the lowest level of press freedom in a quarter of a century and reflects growing authoritarian pressures that threaten the independence of journalism in our nation.

While neighboring countries such as Ghana, Liberia, and The Gambia continue to demonstrate stronger protections for media freedom, Sierra Leone’s decline signals a dangerous erosion of democratic values. The sharp fall in indicators particularly in economic, legal, and security conditions for journalists underscores the urgent need for reform.

As women journalists and media professionals, we raise our voices to highlight the following:

- Freedom of expression is non-negotiable. A vibrant press is the cornerstone of democracy and accountability.

- Journalists must be protected. Threats, intimidation, and restrictive laws undermine the safety and dignity of media workers.

- Government and institutions must act. Sierra Leone cannot afford to lag behind its peers in West Africa. Concrete steps must be taken to restore trust, uphold constitutional guarantees, and safeguard independent journalism.

WIMSAL calls on policymakers, civil society, and international partners to stand with Sierra Leonean journalists in defending press freedom. The decline in our ranking is not just a statistic it is a warning that the rights of citizens to information, transparency, and accountability are under threat.

We reaffirm our commitment to amplifying women’s voices in the media, advocating for reforms, and ensuring that Sierra Leone’s press regains its rightful place as a pillar of democracy in the region.
