Today Girls across Sierra Leone began using a sentence as protection:

“I am Fatima’s child.”

This evening, I had the pleasure of receiving renowned Nigerian Nollywood actress, filmmaker, and producer 𝐔𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐨 on a courtesy visit to my office.

Having passed through the world of acting myself, her visit was particularly special. The film industry gave me an opportunity to appreciate the power of storytelling, culture, and creativity in shaping society.

Though my journey has taken me from acting to public service and advocacy, I remain proud of the role African filmmakers continue to play in telling our stories and inspiring generations.

It was a pleasure sharing this memorable moment with Uche Jombo. Our platforms may change, but our responsibility to inspire and positively impact lives remains.

Today, upon my return home, I was deeply overwhelmed by the massive turnout of women, girls, and HeForShe men who came out from across the country in solidarity with the groundbreaking achievement at the United Nations General Assembly.

This reception affirms that I am not in this fight alone. I am standing with my people, and my people are standing with me.

I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every one of you for your unwavering support.

I assure you that, through our collective effort, the future for women and girls in Sierra Leone will move beyond the "new normal" to a future where every girl feels safe to reach her fullest potential. A future where every girl’s dreams are limitless, and where opportunities are distributed equally and equitably.

Let us continue to stand together in unity and focus, to ensure that our girls are safe, protected, and empowered.

The rousing reception followed her historic presentation of a draft resolution at the United Nations General Assembly to establish an International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.

Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone and President of OAFLAD, has safely returned to Sierra Leone.

She was in New York to present a landmark draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution proposes the establishment of an International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.
