Young Man Loses US$1,800 in Alleged Counterfeit Dollar Scam in Juba

A young man, Akech Deng Ngor, says he was scammed out of US$1,800 in an alleged counterfeit currency scheme in Juba on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement posted on his page, Akech said a man approached his money-transfer centre at around 1:43 PM and requested to exchange US$1,800.

He said he inspected the banknotes, including their colour, size and printing, before completing the transaction.

However, Akech said he realised the money was counterfeit approximately 48 seconds after the man left. When he attempted to follow him, the suspect allegedly escaped on a motorcycle with an accomplice who was waiting outside.

Akech, who said he has two years of experience in the money-transfer business, described the incident as shocking and warned mobile-money operators and local money-transfer agents to exercise greater caution when handling large cash transactions.

He urged operators to take extra precautions when dealing with unfamiliar customers, particularly during high-value currency exchanges.

The young man named Kuel heartbreakingly revealed to the public after long years of waiting to see if there would be a positive impact on the country, but the days go by, and yet things are just getting worse everyday.
