In Power BI DAX, calculations happen in two major ways:
Persistent Calculations: these are calculated columns that run when your data source refreshes and it’s stored in a Data Model.
Another is ‘On-the-fly calculations’ which measures that get calculated dynamically based on the given filter.
Here is a simple rule:
1. Calculated Column = calculate and store
2. Measure = calculate when needed
Understanding this concept will help you build efficient models.
Data Analytics has been an incredible choice and journey.
Want to get into Data Analytics in just 2 months? Start in this order:
1️⃣ Excel — Learn data cleaning, formulas, PivotTables, charts & Power Query.
2️⃣ SQL — Learn to query, filter, join, group, and analyze data.
3️⃣ Power BI — Learn data modeling, DAX, and dashboard creation.
💡 Best tip: Use the same dataset across all three tools and build end-to-end projects.
Learn → Practice → Build → Share.
You don’t have to acquire an expensive tool. Start with Excel then you can copy your tables, charts into either Word document for your reports or PowerPoint for presentation.
What questions should cash and market monitoring assessment help us answer? Here are a few questions answered by the Dashboard.
Is the transfer value adequate to cover the basic needs? In our dashboard, SSP 728,000 covers 114% of the MEB (SSP 640,000).
What are households prioritizing? Food (94%), shelter (72%) and health (65%) dominate spending, while education and household items receive far less. This suggests that the households prioritize survival needs.
Can people actually access markets? 99% can reach a market within two hours, but transport costs of SSP 7,450 still reduce purchasing power.
Are markets stable enough for cash assistance?
Prices remain volatile, particularly for sorghum, which could quickly erode transfer adequacy. It also suggests the need to go for mixed approach of in-kind and cash to offset the effects of price volatility on purchasing power.
Good cash programming is not only about how much we transfer. It is about whether that value remains adequate, accessible and meaningful for households.
