Road Sections and Bypass Roads in Indaw Township Closed Indefinitely
Pajau Media
7 August 2026
Road and bypass roads in Indaw Township have been closed indefinitely since August 5, according to an announcement by the Indaw Township People’s Administration Team.
The announcement stated that the Shwebo-Myitkyina Road, sections of the Indaw Road, and all bypass roads within Indaw town have been closed to ensure the safety of travelers, as heavy rainfall and flooding have severely damaged roads, bridges, and other transportation routes.
Due to the flooding, the bridge on the Indaw bypass road is also submerged and cannot be used. The entrance and exit to Sipat Village remain closed, while the Naba Junction is reportedly being opened and closed intermittently.
At present, travelers and drivers remain stranded along the roads. Meanwhile, on the Myitkyina-Hpakant Road, some sections have also been damaged by flooding, making transportation increasingly difficult.

Pajau Media
7 August 2026
In Mamong Village, Hpakant, which has been experiencing heavy rain and flooding, seven residential houses were severely damaged by debris carried along with the floodwaters, according to local residents.
Since August 3, heavy rainfall has caused water levels in the Sapyra Creek and Maw Wan Creek to rise, resulting in floodwaters entering residential areas, according to reports.
As a result, rocks and debris carried by the overflowing creeks entered residential areas, severely damaging seven houses.
Meanwhile, water seeping from jade mining sites has also entered Hpa Pin Village. As some houses have been submerged, local residents have been forced to relocate.

Illegal Land Plot Sales Could Increase Flooding Risks
Pajau Media
August 6, 2026
The widespread illegal subdivision and sale of natural waterways, wetlands, and paddy fields for residential housing plots in Myitkyina is contributing to localized flooding in some neighborhoods, even after only light rainfall, according to a local resident.
Driven by the lucrative real estate market, land brokers and opportunistic investors have increasingly targeted low lying farmland and natural waterways around Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State.
These natural waterways, which have historically played an important role in controlling seasonal flooding and serving as drainage channels during the rainy season, are now being systematically filled in, divided into small plots, and sold as residential land.
According to residents living in the affected neighborhoods, even light to moderate rainfall now causes water to accumulate rapidly, resulting in sudden flooding within residential areas.
With natural drainage channels disappearing and no adequate urban drainage systems being built to replace the filled in paddy fields, rainwater no longer has proper outlets, causing water to quickly enter homes and roads.
"Even if it rains for only a short time, water immediately accumulates and floods the roads. It even enters our homes. The streams and paddy fields that used to absorb and drain rainwater have been filled in and divided into residential plots," said a resident from a low lying neighborhood in Myitkyina.
According to local sources, the growing demand for residential housing in Myitkyina has accelerated the real estate market, attracting a large number of land brokers who are profiting from the subdivision and sale of land.
Many of these brokers and investors are reportedly selling subdivided agricultural land without obtaining the legally required land-use conversion approvals (Form 10/Form 39) or verifying official land ownership boundaries.
Major Concerns Associated with These Practices-
Illegal Land Use Conversion- Converting agricultural land and designated natural areas into residential plots without approval from the relevant administrative authorities is strictly prohibited under Myanmar's Farmland Law.
Lack of Ownership Security- Buyers of plots located on former waterways that have been subdivided and sold by land brokers may face significant difficulties registering ownership with the Land Records and Survey Department, potentially leading to legal ownership disputes.
Risk of Demolition-Buildings constructed on illegally filled waterways or on agricultural land without authorization may be demolished by local authorities without compensation.
Loss of Agricultural Land- The uncontrolled conversion and sale of farmland surrounding the city significantly reduces local food production capacity while increasing risks to the urban ecosystem.
The public and relevant authorities are encouraged to raise awareness among people intending to purchase land in Myitkyina. Prospective buyers are advised to verify land records with the relevant land management offices, carefully confirm that proper land use approvals and zoning permissions have been obtained, and avoid purchasing plots located on natural waterways or on reclaimed agricultural land.
There have also been cases in Myitkyina where some real estate brokers have classified farmland as village land before subdividing and selling it in smaller plots. In addition, some vacant, fallow, and virgin lands have reportedly been subdivided and sold in cooperation with certain ward and village administrators.
According to local residents, some administrators sign land sale agreements as witnesses in exchange for payment. However, when disputes later arise over these land transactions, they often avoid responsibility and refuse to help resolve the problems.
Therefore, if authorities later demolish or remove illegally subdivided and sold agricultural or village land that lacks legal approval, buyers may suffer substantial financial losses and lose their homes or land.
By that time, some of the real estate brokers who sold the plots have already collected the money and become unreachable, said a resident.
Residents also noted that although many real estate brokers in Myitkyina present themselves online as trustworthy professionals, they frequently fail to take responsibility when land ownership or transaction disputes arise and instead avoid further contact.
In Myanmar, it is prohibited to subdivide and sell vacant, fallow, virgin, agricultural, grazing, forest, or other protected lands as residential plots, and residential construction is also not permitted on such lands. Therefore, prospective buyers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution before purchasing land.

Residents Call for Urgent Resolution to Restrictions on Goods Transport Across Bala Min Htin Bridge
Pajau Media
August 6, 2026
Residents are calling on relevant authorities to urgently resolve restrictions preventing vegetable traders and cargo trucks from crossing the Bala Min Htin Bridge, as traders are suffering financial losses and commodity prices in the city have risen sharply, according to a local resident who contacted Pajau Media.
In Myitkyina, rising commodity prices have made it difficult for residents to regularly afford meat and fish. Furthermore, due to unfavorable weather conditions in Kachin State, local agricultural production has been poor, forcing people to rely largely on food imports from China.
However, transportation difficulties have caused perishable goods to spoil, while restrictions on crossing the Bala Min Htin Bridge have resulted in further losses for traders. Even transporting goods by motorized boats has become difficult due to road closures and arrests, according to the resident, who urged responsible authorities to take accountability and resolve the issue as soon as possible.
The resident said the current situation appears to be contributing to rising prices. At present, a single egg costs around 1,300 kyats, while one viss (approximately 1.6 kilograms) of mustard oil costs up to 15,000 kyats. Therefore, an ordinary household of four people would need a daily income of at least 25,000 kyats to survive in Myitkyina. Given the limited employment opportunities in the city, many residents are facing increasing hardship.
Myitkyina relies heavily on basic food supplies imported from China and Lower Myanmar. However, goods transported from China have been affected by road closures and damaged roads, causing many fresh products to spoil. Truck drivers further alleged that vehicles are not allowed to pass the Bala. Min Htin Bridge unless payments requested by checkpoint officials are made.
At present, the Mandalay-Myitkyina road, an important supply route into the city, remains closed due to the conflict situation. Meanwhile, the Bala Min Htin Bridge, a key trade route for goods coming from China, is also restricting the movement of cargo. Residents are therefore urging authorities to find a prompt solution to ensure the flow of essential goods.

Pangsau Border Market on the India-Myanmar Border Reopens, Reviving Local Livelihoods
Pajau Media
August 5, 2026
The Pangsau border market on the India-Myanmar border, which had been closed for six years, reopened on July 30.
However, it is understood that this does not mean the reopening of the official India-Myanmar border crossing, as activities are currently being carried out only under limited arrangements.
The border market had been closed following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 due to security concerns. Its reopening came after discussions and negotiations between trade organizations and authorities from both countries.
At present, only 30 local residents per day from the Pangsau side are allowed to enter Nampong in India. In addition, India has imposed a number of restrictions on the transportation of goods across the border.
Nevertheless, the resumption of border trade is expected to enable the import of essential goods from India, including medicines, construction materials, and consumer products. It will also allow greater exports of local agricultural produce and traditional handicrafts, providing support to the local economy.
Under the Free Movement Regime (FMR), the border market will be open on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of each month, and only residents living within 10 kilometers of the border who meet the FMR eligibility criteria will be permitted to participate in border trade.
The Pangsau Pass connects Nampong in India with Kachin State in Myanmar. Historically, it has served as an important trade route linking merchants from the Nampong area with traders from neighboring communities on the Myanmar side.
According to officials from both sides, the reopening of the border market is expected to significantly strengthen the local economy, create better economic opportunities for small-scale traders and local residents, and improve livelihoods across the border region.

More Intense Inspections and Arrests Reported at Lamung Zup Checkpoint
Pajau Media
August 5, 2026
At the Lamung Zup checkpoint located north of Myitkyina, troops from the military commission have been conducting intensified inspections of civilians traveling through the checkpoint in recent days, with arrests and detentions also reportedly taking place, according to local residents.
In recent days, civilians reportedly do not know the reason for the intensified questioning. They are being questioned in detail about where they are coming from, where they are going, what they are going to do there, what kind of work they do, and other matters. Their identity cards are also being checked and questioned about, according to sources.
Therefore, civilians traveling through the Lamung Zup checkpoint in recent days have been traveling with particular caution, a local resident said.
“I was stopped while going toward Myitkyina by motorcycle and was asked, ‘Where are you going?’ When I said I was going to the city, they asked what I was going there to do. Then they asked what kind of work I do. They stood there looking at me for quite a long time before finally telling me to go. I don’t know whether I was let go because I’m a woman. They also checked my ID card. In the end, they started speaking Kachin. I think they were members of the Military backed local militia,” the resident said.
It is not known what information or reports prompted the questioning. It is also possible that the questioning is related to military recruitment. In addition, phones, motorcycle toolboxes, and other items are reportedly being inspected, with phones being subjected to more detailed and thorough checks than previously.
It was also reported that on August 1, five male civilians traveling through the same checkpoint were forcibly arrested and detained in a military vehicle. They reportedly have not been released as of today.

Cargo Trucks Barred from Entering and Leaving via Bala Min Htin Bridge
Pajau Media
August 3, 2026
Cargo traders are facing difficulties as cargo trucks are not being allowed to pass through Bala Min Htin Bridge, which connects Myitkyina and Waimaw towns in Kachin State, according to Myitkyina residents.
Bala Min Htin Bridge is an important bridge for transporting goods from China into Myitkyina and other parts of Kachin State. It is said that the current restriction on the movement of goods could cause commodity prices in the region to rise further.
“Right now, Cargo trucks heading into Myitkyina are not being allowed to enter. The trucks have to pay a large amount of tax to cross Bala Min Htin Bridge. Then, taxes are also collected again inside the city. Since the truck drivers have already paid a lot of tax at Bala Min Htin Bridge, they don’t want to pay again. So I think the people collecting taxes here and those collecting them at the bridge cannot reach an agreement over the tax issue. It’s basically a matter of not being able to agree on how to share the proceeds,” a Myitkyina resident said.
The transit fee is charged according to the type of cargo truck. Each cargo truck has to pay at least 1 million kyats, while a 12 wheel truck has to pay more than 12 million kyats. It has reportedly been about a week since cargo trucks were prohibited from crossing the bridge.
However, it is not yet known when the bridge will be reopened to cargo trucks.
At present, prices of some basic food commodities imported from China have risen further in Myitkyina. The prices of onions and garlic have reportedly reached around 10,000 kyats per viss.
The Myitkyina-Mandalay road, which is one of the routes through which goods enter Kachin State, has also been closed due to fighting. With the Bala Min Htin Bridge, another major route for goods entering from China, now also closed, residents are concerned that commodity prices in Myitkyina will continue to rise.
