Tiger tail seahorses are one of our favourite finds at Richelieu Rock. 🐴🌊

Perfectly camouflaged among the reef, they can be surprisingly difficult to spot — even when you know roughly where to look. But there’s a reason we find them at Richelieu Rock far more often than at dive sites throughout the Similan Islands.

So, what makes Richelieu such a good home for them? And where should you be looking on your next dive?

White coral doesn’t necessarily mean dead coral. A bleached coral is stressed, but it can still be very much alive — and if conditions improve, it may recover. 🪸

Learning to recognise the difference between healthy, stressed and dead coral gives us a much better understanding of what’s actually happening on a reef.

It’s something we regularly monitor at our DiveRACE coral restoration site in Phuket, but it’s also useful knowledge for any diver.

The ocean is colourful… but not always in the way we see it at the surface. 🌊

As we descend, water absorbs different wavelengths of light. Red is the first colour to disappear, followed by orange, yellow and eventually much of the visible spectrum.

That’s why deeper reefs can appear increasingly blue, green and muted to our eyes, even when the corals and marine life are naturally full of colour. And also why we advise our divers to carry torches with them!

Underwater lights, strobes and colour correction bring those missing wavelengths back. It’s how underwater cameras can reveal colours that our eyes simply don’t see at depth.

The deeper you go, the less available natural light there is — but the colour hasn’t necessarily disappeared from the subject.

The light needed for us to see it has. 🤿

Decompression sickness isn’t something divers need to be afraid of, but it is something we should understand.

Staying within your NDL is important, but good decompression practices go beyond what your dive computer tells you. Your profile, ascent rate, hydration, sleep, fatigue and even how hard you work during a dive can all play a part.

This becomes even more important when you’re doing three or four dives a day on a multi-day liveaboard trip.

In our latest blog, we look at how to approach decompression safety without making diving feel scary — from sensible dive profiles and slow ascents to Nitrox, currents and knowing when sitting out a dive might be the smarter choice.

A more informed diver is a safer diver.

Marine life doesn’t stay equally active throughout the day. Changes in current and tides can bring food into the reef, trigger feeding behaviour and get entire schools moving at once.

Time it right, and a familiar dive site can suddenly feel completely different — more movement, more action and fish everywhere you look.

It’s why we plan dives around more than just the location. Conditions and timing can make all the difference.

Currents are one of the things that make our reefs so full of life. 🌊

In the Similan Islands, they're usually mild, but they can sometimes be much stronger. If diving in currents makes you nervous, understanding how they work can make them feel a lot less intimidating.
