☕ Did you know that Oe-Cusse (RAEOA) is also home to coffee?

When people think of Oe-Cusse, they often think of its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Yet beyond its rolling green hills lies another hidden treasure—Oe-Cusse coffee.

Last week, the President of Asosiasaun Café Timor (ACT) and the ACT team visited Oe-Cusse to better understand the current state of the local coffee industry, listen to farmers, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

The journey began with visits to several coffee shops in the town of Oe-Cusse. Interestingly, most cafés were serving roasted coffee sourced from Ermera. This shows that while coffee culture is already growing in Oe-Cusse, coffee produced locally has yet to find its place in many local cups.

Over the next two days, the ACT team visited coffee farmers in two different communities.
📍 In Pasabe, farmers continue to care for their coffee trees despite difficult road conditions and limited access to markets. Their resilience reflects both the challenges they face and their commitment to producing quality coffee.
📍 In Loak Foan, we met an organized farmers' cooperative. Although the cooperative has strong local leadership, it still requires support in market access, quality improvement, branding, and connecting with buyers.

This visit also reminded us of the partnership established in 2018, when ACT and an international NGO worked together to provide coffee processing training and post-harvest equipment to coffee farmers in Oe-Cusse. While the project created a solid foundation, the end of the program also meant the end of continuous technical support, leaving many farmers to continue their journey on their own.

Yet one thing has never disappeared—hope.

ACT believes that Oe-Cusse coffee has a bright future. Through stronger collaboration among farmers, cooperatives, government institutions, the private sector, and development partners, the coffee industry in Oe-Cusse can grow once again—from Farm to Cup.

During the visit, the ACT delegation also had the honour of meeting Régio da Cruz Salu, President of the Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno (RAEOA). He warmly welcomed ACT's initiative and expressed his support for strengthening the coffee sector as an important driver of local economic development.

ACT hopes that the RAEOA Government will continue investing in programs that strengthen farmers' capacities, improve post-harvest processing, expand market opportunities, and promote Oe-Cusse coffee both nationally and internationally.

Coffee is more than an agricultural product—it has the potential to become part of Oe-Cusse's identity. Combined with its unique history, culture, and tourism assets, Oe-Cusse has an excellent opportunity to develop coffee tourism, offering visitors an authentic experience from coffee farms to the final cup.

Because Oe-Cusse is not only rich in history—it is also home to coffee worthy of being discovered by the world.

João Maria Lopes
Born on 12 November 1949
Died on 1 March 2026 (aged 76)

Joined the Maubisse Coffee Producers Cooperative “COCAMAU” in 2013 as part of Raimera group in Suco Edi. In 2018, he and eight others became independent as the Erdautuba group, with him as its representative. By 2026, membership had grown to 16.

Volunteered as a model farmer for the coffee field improvement project launched in 2019, undertaking fundamental improvements to his own two coffee fields. He uprooted 250 old trees, cut back 2,450 others, and cultivated 3,500 new coffee seedlings and planted 2,500 of them. The visible changes demonstrated in his coffee fields motivated other cooperative members, leading 305 households to follow his example and improve their fields within five years.

At the 2024 Timor-Leste Coffee Festival, he secured second place in the Coffee Farm Improvement Competition and took first place in the Coffee Quality Competition (fully washed category), clearly demonstrating how proper care of coffee farms impacts quality.

PARCIC hereby honours maun Joao's achievements. For us, who wished to support Timorese coffee farmers in spreading awareness of the need for field improvements through their own voices, each of his words resonated with farmers and all those involved in the coffee sector with a persuasive power beyond our imagination.

On November 19, the National Aeropress Competition began with Round 1 & Round 2 at Cafe Atasabe Cristo Rei, which was attended by 50 participants from various companies and individuals.

Then, on November 21, the Semi-Final and Final Round were held at the Presidential Palace.
