With Deep Gratitude to A Beloved Teacher, Darlene Smith—
Let me grieve,
Unconsolably.
Now is the time.
Hold off pacifying my aching heart.
Standby,
Let me cry.
Tears water Darlene’s garden in my heart.
Sweet Sorrow
I am not a biological child.
Yet a daughter richly blessed
That teachers have many children.
This train too will pass?
Don’t get on?
Let it pass?
Not without a moan and a hiss.
Why do those with so much to give the world not linger on?
Just now,
I’m thrown off my feet,
Fallen away from Earth and sky,
To Learn suddenly that
She has vanished with the Night
Like Aspen leaves fluttering in the breeze she’ s an apparition of shimmering light.
O let me rent my clothes,
And shudder,
Being thoroughly discharged, I will remember,
in time
Her mother hand over mine, guiding the journey through layers of skin, adipose, fluid, muscle, bone,
Pausing,
to show me how to invite the heart of one lying on my table to meet itself
Her mother hand yet cultivates my discerning
That I might perceive the human complex—
Aura and Form,
Texture and Relationship,
Movement and Stillness
How easily my uncertainty dissolves in Her firm, languid Attentiveness.
I expand
In Her Humble Expansiveness,
Sense the power of my own intuition,
discover I’m healer—Privileged Listener.
Only momentarily upturned,
I will soon cease swimming in this soup of denial, anger, guilt, grief
She’s taught me
Rebound,
That anchoring in the dimensions—right time, place, direction
is relative
To being rooted in the Infinite…
Love?
Colonies of Aspens share one giant root
Colonies of Aspens, One Root, One Organism
Does humanity root in One Universal Heart?
If Darlene believed it,
She knew that love wasn’t always felt
Therefore,
Tolerate
Being comfortable with the uncomfortable
She was the model of Tolerance.
Thank you Darlene! Your shimmering light will forever dance in my heart.

These Jinja villagers were curious and eager to learn yoga, and applied themselves seriously. It was serious fun for for all of us children.
