Look what’s brooding at the ranch! Cally fired up the incubator and is hatching quail. They’re so tiny 🐣 Just a day old. These are destined to be some of our layers 🪺 They will start laying eggs as early as 6 weeks old. That’s incredibly soon compared to a chicken. Chickens take months before you get your first egg from them.

We’re so happy to have Cally (and Lizzie) home and proud of all of the work she jumped into 💚

New plant in the pasture! I’ve never seen these before. They’re everywhere this year.

From Plant Life in Alabama

Heliotropium indicum (Indian Turnsole) is a non-native annual Heliotrope species (Heliotropiaceae) that is now common throughout much of the tropics and subtropics. Found in a myriad of habitats from roadside ditches to riversides and swamps, the individual violet/blue flowers are striking as they unfurl from an inflorescence known as a helicoid cyme. Pubescent leaves have winged petioles and are alternately arranged along the stem. Though largely unvetted, this species has been widely used in India (and throughout Asia) as an herbal treatment for inflammation, gastric ulcers, and a variety of other ailments.

“You are not what you eat - you are what you eat eats.” - Omnivore’s Dilemma 🌱

Part of being regenerative means putting back more than we take. We grow Microgreens every week for markets and restaurants. Afterwards, we’re left with the trays that didn’t sell, cut trays, and lots of dirt. In an effort not to waste anything we give the chickens the leftover and cut trays. This gives us a NUTRIENT PACKED chicken egg! 🍳

We dump the trays in the coop. The soil mixes in with the rabbit and chicken manure and waste. The soil captures nitrogen and keeps the coop a hospitable environment for our chickens and rabbits. Later, we can then use this as compost in our gardens!

We get to use the soil 3 times! That’s the closed loop farming food system. 🔄
