Coldcard Hardware Wallet Vulnerability: What You Need to Know
A major security incident involving Coldcard hardware wallets (manufactured by Coinkite) has resulted in the theft of over 1,367 BTC (~$86M–$110M) from more than 4,500 wallet addresses.
The Facts:
* Root Cause: A firmware bug dating back to March 2021 affected seed phrase generation on certain models (such as Mk3 devices running older firmware). Instead of relying strictly on hardware random number generation, key derivation fell back to predictable software values (e.g., serial numbers and internal device timers).
* The Exploit: Attackers were able to systematically recalculate seed phrases offline and derive private keys, draining wallets in automated sweeping scripts—all without needing physical access to the devices.
* Current Status: Coinkite has issued emergency firmware patches. However, updating firmware does not secure an already compromised seed phrase. Users with affected devices must generate a brand-new seed phrase on patched firmware and migrate funds immediately.
If you suspect your Coldcard wallet was compromised in this exploit, CipherBlade is actively investigating the incident.
While asset recovery in cryptocurrency theft is challenging and never guaranteed, taking immediate forensic action is crucial.
Here is how our blockchain forensics team supports affected investors:
* On-Chain Tracking & Mapping: We analyze the movement of your stolen funds to identify key clusters, deposit addresses, or exchange touchpoints.
* Evidence Package Generation: We prepare detailed, court-ready forensic reports documenting the flow of assets and verifying ownership.
* Legal & Law Enforcement Liaison: We coordinate directly with law enforcement agencies, cybercrime units, and legal counsel to ensure your claim is officially logged with authorities and industry compliance teams.
* Recovery Readiness: If law enforcement or exchange freezes lead to asset seizures, having an established forensic evidence package ensures you are positioned to file a legitimate claim for recovery.

US prosecutors have filed five civil forfeiture complaints seeking more than $25 million in crypto tied to romance and investment scams that reportedly affected thousands of victims across the US and Canada.
The patterns in these filings are familiar. Scammers build trust, often through a romantic relationship, then steer victims to fake trading platforms and move funds through layered wallet transfers to hide the trail. One detail worth flagging: several cases involved a second scam offering to "recover" money already stolen. Real recovery does not start with a stranger who contacts you first.
If you think you were targeted, act early. Preserve wallet addresses, transaction hashes, and all communications, report to law enforcement, and be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed recovery. Tracing and asset-freeze work depends on coordination with investigators and counsel, not shortcuts. Learn how the process works at cipherblade.com.
A fake Ledger Live app on the Apple App Store stole $9.5 million from over 50 people in just one week this April. Here's what happened: victims downloaded what they thought was the official app, then unknowingly entered their recovery seed phrases-giving attackers complete access to their Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, and XRP wallets.
How to protect yourself:
• Always verify you're downloading from the official source
• Check the app publisher before installing
• NEVER enter your recovery phrase into any app-no exceptions
If this has happened to you, don't wait. File a report with federal law enforcement at IC3 and reach out. We work with attorney partners and provide forensic tracing to help recover stolen assets.
