BREAKING: America's oldest continuously operating brewpub to close

O'Connell's Pub in St. Louis, MO, will close its doors for the last time March 17, 2027 (St. Patrick's Day). Please give them some business in the meantime to keep them going. **r
O'Connell's is closing. It's been a tough fight, but this economy was the final straw. WHEN we close is still up in the air.
We thought about doing a GoFundMe or making another loan to get us thru September. Business is way down for restaurants everywhere, and we simply couldn't afford to take this hit without a loan. But we have a plan that doesn't include begging for money from the public or from a third party.
The plan is to stay open until MARCH 17 and have one more hurrah on ST. PATRICK'S DAY. We can do that if you all come out and see us one more time before we go. Maybe you can come here a bunch! If you have gift cards, please bring them in and use them. We will stay open as long as we can with the absolute last day being Wednesday, March 17, 2027. We can only do that with your help.
We hope to see you at the pub a few more times before we have to close. The customers at O’Connell’s have been the absolute best. So many of you have been coming here for decades and you will be sorely missed in the future. Our staff has been incredible and done so much hard work to keep the place going thru some really tough days. The relationship that the staff and customers enjoy is truly unique in the business. There are no words that would adequately describe how special that is.
We are hoping to go down with some integrity and allow those who love the place to have some final moments here and then say goodbye to a storied institution that Jack Parker built.
Thank you to all who have supported O'Connell's Pub over the years. It's been a hell of a ride, but all good things must end. We are not alone as many old institutions are going under. We hope that we can handle this closure with some dignity.
Bless you all and thank you. We hope to see you soon!

Germany is banning drinking alcohol in train stations (except inside bars and pubs). Drinking on trains is still allowed. **r
A b**r on the platform while you wait. Normal for decades. That ends this autumn.
Deutsche Bahn is extending its alcohol ban to all 5,400 train stations in Germany. No b**r, no w**e, no spirits on platforms or in station halls. The rollout finishes on October 15, 2026. Bild broke it, DB confirmed it to the German press agency, and boss Evelyn Palla did not soften it: "Es reicht. Genug ist genug."
But the ban is not the part most people will notice.
DB security and the federal police will enforce it. Get caught holding a drink and you are walked out of the station that minute. Do it again and you can be barred from the building for good.
Only the big stations do this today. Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne. Hamburg central banned drinking in April 2024 and fights between passengers fell noticeably. Cleaning got cheaper too. That result is why all 5,400 are next.
Two things stay legal. The bars and restaurants inside stations keep pouring. And there is still no general alcohol ban inside DB trains.
The reason is uglier than the rule. In Baden-Wuerttemberg a DB security worker fell out of a moving regional train after a fight with a drunk passenger. In Rhineland-Palatinate, police say a passenger beat a train conductor to death. Palla says this is about protecting staff.
So the platform b**r goes. The station bar stays. Same building, different rules.
Send this to someone who always grabs a b**r before the train. They have until October 15.

Samuel Smith's Strange Patriarch Has Died at 81 — B**rvana Humphrey Smith, the patriarch of the Samuel Smith Brewery, has died. He was a man who lived in the ‘70s—the 1870s. And in his later years, his “traditional” approach, lauded in the newspaper obits yesterday, curdled into something darker and weirder.
