I AM AN OLD WOMAN
Modified from a poem by Patty Barnhart
I am an old horsewoman
who does not wear turquoise and diamonds,
but I wear a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
and I spend my social security on
Feed and hay and w**e and gin.
I sit on the porch of my barn
and watch the horses out in the pasture,
grazing and running and dozing.
I used to sneak out in the middle of a summer night
and ride Jake, the old bay gelding,
walking across the moonstruck meadow…
if my old bones would allow.
When people come to call, I smile and nod and we chat.
I shovel and muck and sweat, bush hog, drag and fix fences
and wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.
I may be an embarrassment to ALL
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a great friend.
A friend who waited at midnight hour
with patient eyes for me to come.
For that is the kind of old woman I have become.

Please also consider helping
This post is going to ruffle feathers. That’s fine. It needs to be said.
We and every other rescue still in operation on this country are facing insane volumes of requests to take owner surrenders. Rescues are folding everywhere at unprecedented rates. Communities aren’t supporting them and they just can’t hang on anymore.
✨ YES EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES EXIST. THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT THOSE. ✨
The reasons rescues are given are absolutely out of control. Yesterday we fielded TWELVE calls for owner surrenders. The one that took the cake was the request to take a particular dog.
Why?
Because the caller’s daughter had a baby.
Did the dog act out towards anyone in the family?
No.
Then why give the dog up?
“Because the dog is big and the baby is small.”
No, we’re not making this up.
THESE are the reasons we’re talking about. Please don’t do this. You adopted or got an animal from somewhere with the full knowledge that animals require care and attention.
Make it work. For their sake. Rescues are generally volunteer run and these normal folks just like the ones surrendering- they’re having to make tough calls because there are too many animals for too few available homes. They’re having to look animals in the face and say that we’re sorry, we can’t help you.
Animals are dying.
- Spay and neuter.
- Don’t take animals you won’t provide a lifetime of care to.
- Make plans for your animals in the event that something happens to you. Put it in your will.
- Don’t take an animal on that you can’t or won’t move with.
There simply isn’t generally a magical “better home” for your pets when you get tired of them.
