I had the privilege to help create a 5-week curriculum for Cassandra Gibson, a real estate broker and entrepreneur. We developed Detroit Emerge: Blueprint for Ownership, which is a curriculum that includes a student workbook and teacher’s guide that reflects her passion and experience to teach students about financial literacy, homeownership, and wealth building. Students learn about concepts such as credit scores, renting vs. owning, and budgeting. She uses her curriculum to teach young people about building the habits that can help them own their own homes one day and learn the strategies that help them develop good money management practices. For our 11th and final college tour before the May 1 National College Decision Day, we had the opportunity to take 26 students from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Gwinnett Technical College. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in automotive technology, gaming, cybersecurity, carpentry, HVAC, and other careers. This was a great opportunity for many of our students who have not selected a four-year college and are interested in either a trade school or a technical school. We are excited that many of them are going to choose this option and be able to earn certificates, diplomas, or associate’s degree, and enter the workforce. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.

We had the opportunity to take 40 students from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Georgia Gwinnett College. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in nursing, education, audio-visual technology, film, law and justice, and other careers. Many of our kids were excited about their associate’s degree or certificate Nexus programs that help them go straight from school into industry jobs. Georgia Gwinnett College is actually a very beautiful campus, and our kids really felt like it was close enough to home to be a good option for them. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.
