Another behavior Buck is working on is a chin rest. This is where he rests his chin on something (our hand or a rolled towel on a stool) and keeps his body still. This behavior is used to help keep a dog's body still for handling (nail trims, teeth brushing, vaccines, etc). Right now he is working to generalize this behavior (meaning he learns he can do it in any environment, not just the first place he learned it in) this will allow us to us it in the vet office or wherever it may be needed. We will soon add in body handling while he performs this chin rest. This is step 1.

Buck was just here for a Board&Train to continue sharpening his skills. He is working on several skills; here he is showing how well he can Place for increasing amounts of time. This is a useful behavior both in and out of the home; I use it for all sorts of scenarios. For example: when I am coming in the door carrying several bags asking my dog to Place gets them to a safe spot and out from under my feet. It can also be used when you bring your dog to a cafe as when you sit to eat you are asking them to hang out and wait. This prepares your pup for a situation like that and avoids frustration.

Millie is back for a Board&Train to practice relaxing in the house as her family prepares to welcome a new member soon. The other side of the coin to relaxing is getting enough exercise so here she is enjoying herself in the backyard this morning before the heat set in.
Nala is working hard to sharpen her leash walking skills. This is where her baseline is around low-mid level of distractions. Her biggest challenge is when she is near people or dogs she wants to greet. She does well keeping her eyes and ears on her handler until a friend comes close, then it's much harder, but she is making strides and will soon master this challenging skill.

Rosie and her dad are working hard on building calm and focus during trips around town. A busy hardware store on the weekend is a great place to continue this type of work as there are MANY distractions to work around. Rosie is only ~8months old so we are simultaneously socializing her to the world and carefully guiding her through a fear-imprint period. Go Team Rosie!

Ready for a nail trim and ear taping
Buck showing off his skills. Here he demonstrates how he can wait at a threshold (in this case a gate) until he's released through. Once he moves through he turns to check in on his handler for direction of where to go next. This little guy is doing so well! Stay tuned to watch him learn and grow!
Enrichment doesn't have to be complicated. You can buy easy-to-fill toys that take very little time to set up yet they make a big impact on your animal's quality of life. If your budget is tight you can also DIY (as long as you ensure it is safe for your animal to interact with). I will share some DIY solutions in next post.
