Your late-night scrolling isn't a time-management problem as much as it is an escape hatch. Let's face it: you are self-medicating something.

You tell yourself you'll fix it by going to bed earlier. Charging your phone in the other room. Setting a screen time limit.

None of it sticks, and you already know why. The screen is a band-aid that can't heal the bleeding wound you are trying to heal.

You're not bad at managing your calendar or tasks. You're avoiding what shows up the second the house goes quiet. The thoughts. The loneliness. The stuff you've been outrunning all day.

I'm the coach that looks you in the eye when you want to look away. You need help healing that wound while keeping the screen at bay. You are not alone in this. Stop self-medicating.

Comment "1am" if you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Parents: If you keep turning a blind eye towards your child's tech use, you're not solving the problem. You're loving them into a lifelong addiction

They stay up til 3am scrolling.
You have to wake them up because that phone alarm (the reason why you let them have it at night to begin with), didn't wake them up.
You drive them to school late while calling the front office to make an excuse.
You let them crash all afternoon.
You avoid consequences because you hate conflict.

It feels like love. It's actually a misguided attempt at a rescue that has lasting negative consequences for life for your child.

Every time you cushion the fall, your child learns something: it's survivable, because you'll always take the hit...so lets keep doing what I'm doing.

This isn't about punishment. It's about letting the natural weight of the choice land where it's supposed to, on them, not you.

Struggling with this exact pattern at home? DM me; let's talk about A.L.E.R.T.

Deleting the app doesn't delete the addiction. It deletes one door.

Your brain built that road years ago, brick by brick, every time you opened it to escape stress, boredom, or shame and used drugs or alcohol to try to shut it.

Block it. Go 30 days clean. You'll still relapse on day 31.

Not because you're weak. Because nobody rebuilt the road. You just barricaded one exit. Your brain's got a hundred more waiting. New app. New tab. New site. Same escape, different door.

That's the trap with digital addiction. You can't lock the drug in a cabinet. It's everywhere you already carry it. (Therapists: Secrecy compounds the shame cycle. It isolates clients from the people best positioned to support them, including you. By the time they're in your office, the "bodyguard" they've built around the behavior is often more entrenched than the behavior)

You don't need more willpower. You need a new road built where the old one was.

A bad habit hears "not tonight" and moves on. Addiction starts making a case.

Everyone's arguing online right now about whether "addiction" gets thrown around too loosely. Fine. Let's settle it with one test.

A bad habit responds to a boundary. You say no; it shrugs; you move on with your night. Addiction negotiates:

"Just five minutes."
"I've earned it. I had a bad day today"
"Tomorrow I'll start for real."

That bargaining voice, the one building a whole legal case for why tonight's the exception? That's not a habit. That's a hostage negotiation, and you're the hostage.

(In addiction terms, that voice is called a "Cognitive Distortions," aka CDs. I spend 2 weeks alone in my program identifying my clients' CDs and teaching them techniques to overcome them)

Stop calling it a bad habit if it keeps surviving your promises to quit.

39 states now restrict phones in schools. California's law kicked in this summer. 77 percent of adults support it.

Good. I'm for it. Kids need distraction-free hours.

But here's what a phone ban does NOT do. It doesn't teach a kid what to do with ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—บ, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜…๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜†, ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ once the bell rings and the phone comes back out.

You learn to overcome boredom, anxiety, etc. at home over the years, growing up in a healthy tech environment. ๐—œ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ป'๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜, then taking the phone away at school doesn't automatically teach them those traits.

They go into (let's call it what it is) ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—น. Teenage tantrums, rebellions, and drama ensue! (I'd love to hear from some educators on this)

Removing the phone for seven hours a day treats the symptom. Building the skill to self-regulate treats the cause.

Ask yourself: what happens at 11:47 pm, when the school ban isn't watching anymore?

If you want a real plan for after 3 pm, not just during school hours, DM me.

AI can help you think. It can't do the work of being known.

1 in 10 adults now use an AI chatbot for emotional support. 1 in 25 for companionship.

Convenient? Sure. Real? No. Dangerous Yes!

I get it:
AI never judges you.
It never gets tired of you.
It never brings up what you did last Tuesday when you were drunk at the office party and made a fool of yourself (for example)

But that's exactly the problem. Growth doesn't come from a companion that never pushes back. It comes from being known, mess and all, by someone with training and empathy, where a client knows everything is confidential.

As humans, we instinctively know that talking about our feelings/problems is good...but it needs to be with another human! Chatbots give the illusion of sentience, making you feel like they "gets you"... but they don't.

This leaves users open to

You can't outsource connection to a chatbot and expect it to fix the loneliness driving your addiction.

"What do you recommend for someone who can't stop doing something?"

A therapist referral partner asked me that this week.

My answer never changes.

๐—”๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†.

To yourself first.

Then to the people who love you.

But here's the part everyone skips. You need accountability to someone outside your life too. Someone who isn't tangled up in your day-to-day "mess".

That person sees clearly. Guides you. Cheers for you. Calls you out when you need it. Looks you in the eye when you try to look away.

That's not weakness. That's the whole strategy.

Share this with someone who needs to hear it.

They built a machine to hook you. Then acted ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ when it worked.

's on trial right now. Multiple states argue that Instagram and Facebook were built to be addictive on purpose. Infinite scroll. Notifications. Algorithms tuned to keep you swiping.

I'm a former engineer. I know exactly what happens when you design a system around one metric. You get exactly what you engineered for.

You didn't lose to weak willpower. You lost to a blueprint built by people who get paid every second you can't put the phone down.

A couple of months ago, I deleted (gasp!) several games (Candy Crush, anyone with me?!) and social media apps from my phone. I had to. I saw how many HOURS I lost to doomscrolling, and I was disgusted!

Here's what nobody tells you. Once you see the blueprint, you can build your own that works for you, not against you. That's the whole job.

Ready to build a blueprint that works for you instead of against you?

Your teen's new best friend might not be a friend at all.

OpenAI just rolled out a teen version of ChatGPT. Stronger guardrails around self-harm, sexual content, and romantic interactions. Good. Necessary.

But it tells you something bigger.

Our kids are forming real emotional attachments to AI. Confiding in it. Trusting it with things they won't tell us.

The question isn't just "what is my teen watching?" It's "Who is my teen talking to when they're hurting?"

It was bad enough when kids went to chat groups for advice...now they have access to a machine with still untested safety measures, no empathy, bad advice, and unchecked validation to placate our kids with ZERO privacy!

Their underdeveloped prefrontal cortex can't see through the illusion of sentience that AI chatbots use. They don't see that it's a tool, not a toy, not a robot like the ones you see in science fiction.

Tonight, don't ask about screen time. Ask this instead: "When something feels heavy, who do you go to?" Then actually listen to the answer.

I write about this stuff every week for parents trying to stay ahead of it. Subscribe to the Ctrl+Alt+Recovery Blog. DM for the link, or visit our website.

Here's what nobody tells you about the other side. It's better than you think.

No more secrets. No more managing a second life. No more waking up already exhausted.

Real energy. Real focus. Real relationships, the kind where people trust what they see because it's actually true.

I'm not describing a fantasy. I'm describing Tuesday. My Tuesday, and hundreds of others I've coached.

You don't have to stay stuck. You don't have to keep white-knuckling it alone.

There's a way through, and it's more available than you think.

I recently went on a trip of a lifetime to France and the Netherlands. 25 years ago, that wasn't even a possibility. I almost gave that all up for a screen.

If you've read this far, some part of you already knows it's time.
