This Juneteenth, we're honoring the "Mothers of Gynecology: Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey.
In the 1840s, these enslaved women, along with others whose names were never recorded, were subjected to repeated surgical experiments by Dr. J. Marion Sims to repair vesicovaginal fistulas.
No consent. No anesthesia.
We choose to remember these women and recognize that behind every advancement in medicine are human lives, human experiences, and a responsibility to learn from the past while building a better future. The history of medicine includes remarkable achievements, but also difficult lessons about ethics, consent, and whose stories are told.
