Women have me taught me some of the most meaningful lessons in life. Spring teaches me too. Here’s to her lessons and a resilient spring forward.

The Secret Life of Spring Mysteriously, seasons change. It’s not that they change but how they change that’s intriguing. To begin with, they change intuitively. One of the most difficult aspects of emotional distress is not knowing when to reach out for support. Dr. Robin Casey, founder of Spring Psychological Services, explores the questions beneath the question: When should I seek psychological support?

This is often the face of depression and the face prior to a su***de attempt. Other times there a signs someone is struggling. Signs include withdrawal, not acting like one’s self, and expressions of hopelessness. The only real way to know if someone is thinking about su***de is to ask directly, kindly, and matter of factly. If the answer is no, it’s an opportunity to remind that person you’re there for them as a source of emotional support. If they deny suicidal thoughts but your gut tells you otherwise, lean in lovingly. If they express suicidal thoughts, help them find resources, including other loved ones, and make plans with them in the near future. Asking is an act of love.

We’re a group of psychologists and we’re so excited to start a Walk With a Doc chapter in Marietta, Georgia! The initiative began in Columbus, Ohio in 2005 by a cardiologist named Dr. David Sabgir. He was constantly speaking with his patients about the power of physical movement to prevent and treat heart disease. He eventually came to the conclusion that helping patients translate knowledge into action would require, well, action. He began walking with patients in his community and there are now over 500 chapters worldwide.

Just as regular physical movement improves heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes it also helps alleviate anxiety, stress, and depression. Unfortunately, we relate to Dr. Sabgir’s experience that talking with patients about physical activity doesn’t always result in action. With this rationale and context in mind, we invite you to take a free mental health walk with us each month.

Before each walk we’ll spend a few minutes talking about one strategy to improve mental health - mindfulness, forgiveness, healthy boundaries, sleep hygiene, etc. After that, we’ll simply walk, talk, and take joy in the great outdoors. We hope you’ll join us on October 9th!

Clinical psychologist, Allison Christopher, on the paradox of choosing discomfort.

ā€œOne benefit of therapy is the actual experience of sitting in your discomfort. The nature of therapy itself requires that you choose to explore uncomfortable feelings. By engaging in therapy, you are actively working to undo the previous equation (avoiding pain = more pain). You are teaching yourself that 1- the pain and discomfort is yucky but it’s not unmanageable and 2- you are capable of handling it. Every time you choose to face your pain and don’t escape, you’re reinforcing a new, healthy pattern. And, in time, the pain will actually reduce! Wild, I know. ā€œ

Welcome to Spring, where mental health, physical health, and relationships are tended to in equal measure. If you look through our services and personal statements, you may notice that our practice is built upon our knowledge that physical and mental health are inseparable and that only when we develop insight into ourselves can we flourish in our relationships.

Our services span the spectrum from preventative efforts to curb mental health concerns, psychological assessments and evidence-based therapies to help those in need (often done in collaboration with primary and specialty care providers), supervision for psychologists in training, and engagement with our community to promote a culture in which mental health can be openly discussed and all members are encouraged to thrive.

Whether you’re looking to explore your emotions, improve your health, or strengthen your relationships, we’d be honored to be a part of your journey.
