Please welcome Doug Keiser to Southern Professionals.

For 17 years at Walmart, Doug was the buyer — rising to VP, Divisional Merchandise Manager over Lawn & Garden and Hardware & Paint. He's sat on the exact side of the table our clients work to win, so he knows firsthand what earns a product its spot on the shelf.

Now he brings that buyer's-eye view to the brands we represent.

Welcome aboard, Doug!

Here's a cost that quietly eats brands alive in the value channel - and it never shows up in the sales pitch: compliance.

Big retailers run on precise rules. How you label, pack, ship, and deliver all carry exact requirements. Miss them, and you get hit with chargebacks - fees pulled straight from what you're owed. A small paperwork slip on the front end can quietly erase your margin on the back end.

The usual suspects:
- Shipments that arrive late or incomplete (OTIF penalties)
- Labeling or packaging that doesn't meet spec
- Missing or incorrect documentation
- Routing and transportation errors

The frustrating part? Most of these are completely avoidable. Compliance isn't the glamorous side of retail - but staying clean protects the margin you fought so hard to win. Managing certifications, vendor non-compliance issues, and transportation claims so our clients don't bleed money on penalties is a big part of the quiet work we do every day.

Win the sale. Then keep what you earned.

Getting your product on the shelf is a huge win. Keeping it there is a different job entirely.

Meet the unglamorous hero of retail success: replenishment.

Here's the trap brands fall into. You win the item. It launches. It sells, and if the store can't restock fast enough, you hit the worst outcome in retail: empty shelves and lost sales, right when demand is proving itself.

Good replenishment keeps the flow steady:
- Forecasting that anticipates demand instead of reacting to it
- Watching in-stock rates so gaps get caught early
- Keeping supply and store demand in sync, week over week

An out-of-stock isn't just a missed sale today. It quietly trains the shopper to reach for a competitor tomorrow. Staying in stock is how a launch becomes a lasting business - and it's a big part of the weekly work we do behind the scenes.

Success means nothing if it doesn't serve someone else. It's one of our core values.

We're proud to give back through Water is Basic, an organization on a bold mission: clean water for every person in South Sudan by 2030.

What we love most is who's leading it. Water is Basic trains and equips women to launch and run well-repair businesses in their own communities - turning broken wells back on for thousands of families. It's not aid handed down. It's local women building lasting change, one repair at a time.

The impact speaks for itself: more than 1.5 million people now have access to clean water, through 55 women-led teams - and 100% of every dollar given goes straight to water projects on the ground.

We've believed since 1979 that a company should be measured by more than the business it builds. Getting to play a small part in this work is a privilege.

"So... what exactly does a retail broker do?"

It's one of the most common questions we hear from brands early in their journey - and a fair one. The role gets boiled down to "someone who makes introductions." It's so much more than that.

A great broker is your boots-on-the-ground sales team inside the retailer. That means:

- Relationships - knowing the right buyer, at the right desk, and staying on top of the constant reshuffling of who manages what
- Representation - actively pitching, following up, and advocating for your product, not just opening a door and walking away
- Ex*****on - handling item setup, compliance, line reviews, and replenishment so nothing slips through the cracks
- Insight - turning retailer data into a clear strategy for what to sell, where, and at what price

Here's the simplest way to think about it: you know your product better than anyone. A broker knows the retailer better than anyone. Put those together, and you've got a real shot at the shelf.

To everyone stocking shelves, moving freight, driving routes, and keeping the value channel running — thank you.

Retail doesn't work without the people behind it. This Labor Day, we're grateful for the workers in every store, warehouse, and truck who make it possible for brands and shoppers to connect.

From all of us at Southern Professionals — have a safe and restful Labor Day. You've earned it.

It's August. You're thinking about the last few weeks of summer. Retail buyers? They're already deep into spring.

One of the hardest adjustments for a new brand is this: the retail calendar runs months ahead of real life. By the time a season shows up in stores, the decisions that filled those shelves were made a long time ago.

Right now, while the rest of us are firing up the grill:
• Holiday Q4 programs are already locked
• Spring resets are being planned
• Line reviews for future seasons are underway

The brands that win aren't scrambling to catch the current season. They're already working on the next one — sometimes two ahead. Miss the window, and you're not late by weeks. You're late by a full cycle.

Staying ahead of that calendar is a big part of what we do for our clients. Because in retail, "on time" means months early.
