“If you’ve never attended a firefighter funeral after a line of duty death ( or LODD) just know that they are both tragic and beautiful. Two things can be true. Tradition meets loss. Your worst fear meets lucky to be alive awareness. Solemn silence meets wailing bagpipes. Streets are lined several deep with uniformed men and women in the fire service who have come from all over not just the nation but the globe. Bright red trucks are draped in black fabric. Badges are covered in black tape. Class A uniforms and white gloves are dug out of closets and cedar chests. There’s chatter and there’s hush. There’s coming together and falling apart. There’s naked awareness and fully clothed gratitude. It’s a sight and it’s a feeling. Firehouses and homes of firefighters are opened up to welcome those who came and stories, memories & tears are shared by the ones closest to the one who’s died. It’s something they do for each other and I always say “you don’t see accountants showing up for fellow accountants funerals”. Memories of LODD processions I’ve attended never fade. Today retired captain .mccullough attended the procession for Boston FF Bobby Kilduff. He never met him. It doesn’t matter. They were brothers… “
