As Sickle Cell Awareness Month comes to a close, there’s one thing we want you to know: Your blood donation can make a difference.
And here’s an important fact: One in three Black blood donors is a match for people living with sickle cell disease.
Patients with sickle cell disease can experience pain crises when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow and reduce oxygen, as Dr. Trailokya Pandit with Piedmont explains.

Two years after Hurricane Helene, the road to recovery continues for many Georgia families.
Thanks to donors and community partners, the Red Cross has continued supporting those impacted through long-term recovery grants and local recovery efforts.
Because recovery doesn't end when the storm does.

Red Cross volunteers are ready to respond to emergencies 24/7/365 across 159 counties in Georgia. Last week, volunteers responded to 46 disasters, mostly home fires. Today is National Good Neighbor Day.
Whether it's checking on a neighbor after a disaster, helping during extreme weather or simply stopping to say hello, looking out for one another helps build stronger and safer communities.
The American Red Cross encourages everyone to stay connected with neighbors, especially during emergencies. If someone needs assistance after a disaster, remind them that free Red Cross support may be available by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or visiting RedCross.org.
When disasters strike, community leaders, including the American Red Cross, meet at emergency operations centers, or EOCs, to coordinate the response.
