It is incredible how quickly a single post or video can connect a dog in need with the exact right family, often in a matter of hours. We are absolutely heartbroken to share that we lost our precious boy, Obi, on Tuesday night.
It happened with terrifying speed. Right after dinner, Obi suffered from bloat - Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). Even though we followed all the rules, his deep chest and naturally anxious personality made him incredibly vulnerable. It is the mother of all emergencies, and despite noticing the signs immediately, it took him from us in what feels like the blink of an eye.

For the two years he was with us, Obi filled our home with his hyper-alert personality, his booming bark that could wake the dead, and so much love. After being surrendered and returned before finding his way to us through the Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue (AWCR), we are so grateful we could give him a safe place where he could finally rest his head and know true love.

We miss him more than words can say. Please, if you have a deep-chested dog, please familiarize yourself with the signs of bloat—knowing them can save a life.
Rest in peace, Obi. You were the best boy.

Key Warning Signs of Bloat in Dogs
• Unsuccessful retching: The dog tries to vomit or cough but nothing comes up except foam or saliva.
• Swollen or hard abdomen: The stomach area looks visibly distended or feels tight like a drum.
• Extreme restlessness: Pacing, whining, or an inability to get comfortable or lie down.
• Heavy panting: Rapid breathing and excessive drooling.
• Pale gums: A sign of shock and poor blood circulation.

If a dog shows these signs, every minute counts, and they must be rushed to an emergency vet immediately.

The Hidden Connection: Anxiety and Bloat
Obi had an anxious personality and was constantly on high alert. This is a massive piece of the puzzle of what may have caused Obi to bloat. Major veterinary studies, including extensive research from Purdue University, have proven that nervousness, anxiety, and a high-stress temperament are significant, independent risk factors for bloat (GDV).
Anxious dogs tend to:
• Swallow excess air (aerophagia): When a dog is hyper-vigilant, panted frequently, or easily startled, they unconsciously gulp air into their stomach.
• Have altered stomach motility: Chronic stress physically changes how the stomach processes food and gas, making a sudden accumulation much easier.

Even though we gave him a full hour to rest after his dinner—which is the textbook standard recommendation—his baseline anxiety meant his stomach was already vulnerable. When he drank water and went out to p**p, a sudden movement or a simple gulp of air may have been all it took to trigger the twist. The fact that he physically vomited his entire dinner means the twist happened with terrifying speed, sealing the stomach's entrance and exit.

Knowing that Obi’s transition was handled with gentleness and dignity can bring a small piece of comfort to an otherwise devastating night.

When Hayley first arrived at AWCR, she was a broken, hurting stray. Her skin was in terrible condition, her back leg was badly injured, and X-rays revealed a broken pelvis that was trying to heal on its own. The heavy scarring on her leg told a heartbreaking story of a likely run-in with a car and painful road rash. 💔But after a lot of pain, uncertainty, and a whole lot of love, Hayley’s physical wounds are healed. Today, she is walking into a brand new chapter: she has a FOREVER family to call her own! 🏡✨We absolutely love happy endings, and we couldn't be happier for this resilient girl. Have a wonderful life, Hayley! You earned it. 😭❤️🌈 A HUGE, heartfelt thank you to our absolute BEST foster family. We say it all the time because it’s true—we completely depend on your dedication, and we couldn't do this life-saving work without you!

🐾 PUPPY PROGRESS UPDATE: Archie! 🐾
Remember Archie? This sweet, 11 mos. old boy is absolutely thriving in his foster home and proving to be an absolute superstar student! 🌟
His foster mom reports some HUGE wins recently:
• 🚽 Potty training champ! He recently started asking to go outside all on his own.
• 🛏️ Bedtime pro! When it's time for sleep, you just say "go to bed" and he runs right into his crate.
• 🧠 Fast learner! He's just a young pup who didn't know the rules before, but he catches on so quickly. While he can get a little "mouthy" when excited, he's doing great learning to swap teeth for toys! 🧸
• 🚶‍♂️ Great house manners! For a high-energy pup, he behaves beautifully inside the house and is an absolute dream on walks.
Archie can still be a little timid around brand-new things and might try to run away when startled, so he'll love a family ready to help him build up his confidence. But once he knows he's safe he gives the absolute best snuggles and is just bursting with love! 🥹❤️

Hayley update: The Definition of Resilience! That's our Hayley!
If you are looking for a true survivor with a heart of gold, look no further than Hayley. Hayley recently underwent her routine spay surgery, but a closer medical look revealed just how much this brave girl has overcome. X-rays showed a previously broken pelvis that is healing on its own, and the markings on her rear—once thought to be from poor nutrition—are actually healed road rash. Hayley has clearly been through an incredibly tough journey, but you would never know it from her sweet spirit. Despite everything life has thrown at her, Hayley is not looking back. She is on the mend, and ready to find her forever home. She has closed the chapter on her difficult past and is looking for a family who will give her the safe, pampered, and deeply loved life she has always deserved. Hayley has proven she can survive the worst—now she is just waiting for the best.

Hayley is approx 2 years old, good with other dogs, housebroken, calm (a couch potato), crate trained and would be okay with kids. (Note: Hayley's foster family is leaving town, so we must find Hayley a forever home or another foster no later than 9/21/26.)
