Natural Learning Alternative is a child led nature school. We believe learning is a natural human process and it happens without force.
There is a Butterfly Effect that will occur as humans are allowed to learn at their pace and by pursuing their own interests. Our free school days generate spontaneous moments of curiosities and interactions in an organic way and can spark massive, lifelong shifts in growth and understanding.

NLA free schoolers end of the year luau was just perfect!
During the limbo, I had a realization although I can only prove correlation. The longer youāve been a part of NLA community, the more flexible you are. Hereās to our tall and longtime learner Echo who wowed us over and over again with her flexibility and resolve! š
As we wrap up the 2025/2026 school year, we canāt help but reflect on the magic that happens when children are trusted to follow their interests.
This year our free schoolers wrote original scripts and performed plays, hosted an open mic day, shared art showings, built instruments, celebrated cultures at our international fair, harvested bamboo, baked homemade bread, held a talent show, welcomed bees, threw a crow party, created an entire civilization, hosted a luau, and thatās just naming a few!!!
Every project was a collaboration of efforts led by our learners.
Interest-based learning is learning that lasts. When children are deeply engaged, they donāt just memorize information, they live it, create it, and carry it with them.
What a beautiful year of community, creativity, imagination, and growth.

Weāve had a lot of goodness happening at NLA with our free schoolers- an interest fair, jug band, bocci ball, creative play and rain play, a fieldtrip and friend time and more.

A lot can happen on a cold day with these free schoolers. Child led is best because the level of excitement, engagement, and ingenuity generated when they do what they want to do is the most BEAUTIFUL thing!
