The real Texas. Unfiltered history, hidden places and the stories that built the Lone Star State
Since the 1880s, travelers near Marfa have watched mysterious lights flicker across the desert plain after dark.
Some blame ghosts, some blame refracted headlights on Highway 67 — no explanation has ever fully solved it.
Head out to the viewing area after sunset and see for yourself.

Presidio La Bahía has stood in Goliad since the 1700s — and in 1836 it became the site of one of the deadliest days of the Texas Revolution.
Over 300 Texan prisoners were executed here on Santa Anna's orders, a moment that fueled the cry "Remember Goliad" alongside the Alamo.
The walls still stand. The story still stings.

In the 1880s, Judge Roy Bean declared himself "The Law West of the Pecos" and ran his courtroom out of a saloon in Langtry.
He fined outlaws, married couples, and kept a cold b**r within arm's reach the whole time.

Enchanted Rock has been pulling people up its granite dome for thousands of years.

Where the desert meets the Gulf — Padre Island's dunes roll straight into the surf.
Miles of open beach, sea breeze, and not much else in sight. It's the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world, and it feels like it.
Some coastlines you drive to. This one you disappear into.
In 1840, a peace council in San Antonio turned into one of the deadliest days in Comanche-Texan relations.

At 567 feet, the San Jacinto Monument is the tallest war memorial column on Earth — taller than the Washington Monument.
It marks the ground where Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836, in a battle that lasted just 18 minutes.
Eighteen minutes that changed everything.

Standing at 302 feet, the Texas State Capitol is taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington — by design.
Built in 1888 out of pink Texas granite, it's still the largest state capitol in the country.
Everything really is bigger here.
