I was chatting with Amanda recently about some reality show where some guy cheated on his ex with her best friend. And we were reflecting on how common these stories are. It doesn’t make some sense on the surface how someone could do such a cold thing, but when you look underneath, it always traces back to an unmet need that the person is trying to fulfil.

When someone cheats in a relationship, either a man or a woman, the underlying reason is the same. They need a transgression big enough to actually feel something. What happens in the early stages of a relationship is that dopamine is driving most of the interaction. If a person isn’t connected to their body and isn’t able to feel deeply, when that dopamine wears off, they’re either going to get bored and think the relationship needs to change, or they cheat to fulfill the novelty they now miss.
