Did you know 50% of all wildfires in Texas come from 2 human causes…1 of which is Equipment use.
Equipment use is a broad category, and sometimes difficult to understand. Any fire that is started by something mechanical is considered equipment use. This can include dragging tow chains on a trailer, wheel bearings overheating, mowing and shredding activities, parking or idling over dry grass, failed spark arresters on equipment, overheated or malfunctioning hay baling equipment, and even welding. Just to name a few of the most common equipment causes.
During the current drought conditions, please be mindful of all outdoor activities that could potentially create a spark and a wildfire, and obey local burn bans that have been put in place to protect us all.

Around 5:00 p.m. on September 4, 2011, emergency calls began pouring in as a wildfire rapidly spread through Steiner Ranch. Fueled by drought conditions, high temperatures, and strong winds, the fire would become one of the most destructive wildfires in Travis County history.
Now, 15 years later, the people who lived through it share their stories.
In this special commemorative video, residents and firefighters reflect on the day that forever changed Steiner Ranch. Through firsthand accounts, they remember the uncertainty, loss, courage, and determination that emerged as neighbors helped neighbors and first responders fought tirelessly to protect lives and property.
Their stories remind us that while the fire changed our community, it did not define it. The resilience, preparedness, and partnerships built in the years that followed continue to strengthen our region's ability to face future wildfire threats.
Whether you experienced the Steiner Ranch Fire yourself or are learning about it for the first time, this video preserves an important chapter in our community's history and highlights the lessons that remain relevant today.
Thank you to everyone who shared their memories and helped tell this story.
