The dangerous delay of Texas' maternal mortality stats 09/08/2026

A new Houston Chronicle op-ed by Dr. Faith Fletcher and Dr. Kari White, the executive and scientific director of Resound Research for Reproductive Health and nonresident fellow at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, examines the delay in the release of the Texas state Maternal Mortality Report and the decision to omit comprehensive analysis of deaths from 2022-2023, the first two years after the state abortion ban.

The authors write,"Omitting this analysis is unethical. It denies the public critical information about why women are dying and, most importantly, what could have been done to prevent those deaths."

The authors call for the state to fully review maternal deaths and reporting what they learn in order to identify systemic problems, improve care, and prevent future tragedies.

Dr. Anitra Beasley speaks to the Dallas Morning News on the urban-rural maternal healthcare gap in Texas.

A new report from the March of Dimes shows that over half of Texas counties were maternity care deserts (2024). Through 2025, the number of counties with no licensed OB-GYNs has hovered above 161.

Prenatal and maternity care are essential to having healthy pregnancy and postpartum periods.

This story in The Lab Report focuses on nurse practitioner Micaela Sanchez and her clinic, Women’s Health Services in East Dallas. The clinic seeks to center women's needs and experiences, especially seeking contraception.

“When people can use their preferred contraceptive method, they’re more likely to use it consistently,” says Dr. Anna Chatillon, research scientist at Resound Research for Reproductive Health. “They’re more likely to be able to achieve their family formation goals and other life goals.”

In this new brief, we report on findings from 219 practicing Texas ob/gyns who completed an online survey in late fall 2025, after the passage and implementation of SB 31, also known as The Life of the Mother Act.

We focus on physicians’ awareness of SB 31 and their concerns about treating patients experiencing pregnancy complications. We also discuss mechanisms to support the Texas ob/gyn workforce in providing timely, evidence-based care.

The brief finds that ob-gyns are aware of SB 31 but lack administrative guidance. They also have legal concerns about the legal consequences of providing care to patients and a widespread desire for more administrative support.

Micarriage management, including use of mifepristone, is not legally restricted in Texas. However, a 2025 survey of Texas OB/GYNs found that mifepristone was not readily available for them to provide to their patients.

🔴Only 12% of Texas OB/GYNs were able to prescribe mifepristone and access it without difficulty.

🔴71% of Texas OB/GYNs said they did not have access to mifepristone at their practice, or were not sure.

Although Texas OB/GYNs reported that misoprostol is more widely available than mifepristone for miscarriage management, they also reported challenges:

🔴Less than half (43%) of Texas OB/GYNs were able to prescribe misoprostol and access it without difficulty.

The outcomes of several pending court cases could make evidence-based regimens for miscarriage management that include mifepristone more difficult–or impossible–for physicians and patients to access in Texas and nationwide.
