¿A ti te pagan por diseñar la utilería?
Es una pregunta que parece obvia… hasta que empiezas a trabajar en teatro.
Hay muchas tareas que la escena ha normalizado como si "vinieran incluidas". Igual que durante mucho tiempo se asumió que el maquillaje de actores y actrices simplemente ocurría, la utilería suele quedar en un limbo: la resuelve producción, asistencia de dirección, escenografía… o quien tenga tiempo.
Muchas veces sin crédito.
Y muchas veces sin pago.
Pero ¿qué pasa cuando la utilería deja de ser un lápiz o una taza y se convierte en un trabajo de investigación, diseño, fabricación o búsqueda especializada?
¿Por qué seguimos pensando que no merece un presupuesto propio?
No se trata de señalar culpables.
Se trata de cuestionar prácticas que hemos repetido durante años y preguntarnos si todavía tienen sentido.

¿En tus proyectos existe un presupuesto específico para el diseño y desarrollo de utilería o sigue siendo una responsabilidad "incluida"?

Turns out you don't have to grow up with these tools to learn them. You just have to start, stay a little uncomfortable, and keep showing up. The small, engaged audience beats the viral one.

¿Alguna vez te has fijado en los créditos de un programa de mano?
O mejor dicho…
¿En los créditos que no aparecen?
Vemos una escenografía.
Vemos un maquillaje.
Vemos utilería.
Vemos objetos construidos especialmente para la obra.
Pero a veces no existe ningún crédito para quien hizo ese trabajo.
¿Eso significa que nadie lo diseñó?
¿O que alguien del equipo terminó haciéndolo "porque había que sacarlo"?
En las artes escénicas hay muchas tareas que, por usos y costumbres, terminan resolviéndose sin reconocimiento y, en muchos casos, también sin remuneración.
Lo curioso es que, si ese mismo trabajo lo realizara una persona especializada, nadie dudaría en considerarlo un servicio profesional.
Entonces…
¿En qué momento deja de tener valor solo porque lo hizo alguien del equipo?
Quizá ha llegado el momento de revisar estas prácticas y preguntarnos si siguen siendo justas para quienes sostienen el trabajo detrás del escenario.

¿Soy yo o la gente que trabaja en artes escénicas envejece más lento? 👀
No hablo solo de la apariencia.
Hablo de la curiosidad, la energía, la capacidad de emocionarse y de seguir jugando incluso después de muchos años de carrera.
Llevo más de veinte años trabajando con artistas escénicos y es algo que observo una y otra vez.
Y me pregunto si tendrá que ver con la naturaleza de nuestro trabajo.
¿Será que amar profundamente lo que hacemos influye en cómo atravesamos el paso del tiempo?
¿O será que crear, movernos, imaginar, resolver problemas y colaborar constantemente mantiene activa una parte de nosotros que normalmente dejamos de ejercitar?
No tengo la respuesta.
Pero sí una sospecha: quizá el arte no solo transforma a quien lo presencia.
Quizá también transforma, poco a poco, a quienes lo hacemos.
