ATX Koi | Providing high quality Japanese & Domestic Koi in Austin, Texas 09/01/2026

If you take one thing from me, take this: look at your fish every day.

Koi can't tell you they're sick. They show you instead: Fins clamped tight instead of fanned out, one fish off alone in a corner, a quick flick and scrape against a rock, food they'd normally hit just sitting there. You can only catch it if you're actually watching them every day.

I spend ten quiet minutes at the pond’s edge with my morning coffee before my day starts. Half the time this is just the best part of my day. The other half is why I’m usually able to catch problems while they're still small.

Slow down, take a few deep breaths and just watch them. It’s a lovely habit, and you’ll find that they'll tell you plenty.

Myth: A clean pond is a scrubbed pond.

Nope. It was years before I learned to stop scrubbing it. Wish I'd known sooner!

Run your finger along a healthy pond wall, and you'll feel it — that soft, velvety green film every instinct says to wipe off. It’s pond scum, right? Resist that thinking—and the urge to scrub it off. That film buffers your pH, feeds your fish, produces oxygen, and houses the bacteria that keep the water safe. It's not a sign of a dirty pond at all. In fact, it’s a good sign of pond health on the way.

Scrub it off, and you’ll likely set off what’s known as an algae crash, where ammonia levels shoot up, oxygen levels plunge, and your fish are in big trouble fast. The long, stringy stuff by the waterfall? Feel free to pull that off and discard it. But the velvet on the walls? Celebrate it! (And leave it alone!) It means your pond is maturing and getting healthy.

Here’s what Kris, who built a pond with us a few years back, has to say about us:

"Rajat helped me build my koi pond and taught me more about koi than I ever expected to learn… how to actually read your water, avoid the mistakes that cost you fish, and stop stressing so you can just enjoy them." — Kris Perez

Special shout-out to Kris—she has captured the whole point and purpose of the book. Less worrying. More sitting at the edge of the water with a coffee, watching these beauties do their thing.
