Steiner Ranch Sawdust builds custom yard pieces and home accents in our local garage shop. Luci, our rescue shop supervisor, handles quality control.

We use cedar whenever possible and other suitable materials when needed. Built local. Built better.

Our Squirrel B&B is now taking reservations.

Our prototype squirrel house found a new home last week, so naturally we took that as an excuse to build another one.
..and upgrade it.

Introducing the Squirrel B&B.

Built from cedar with a shingled roof, predator-protected entrance, easy-clean access, and its own fenced-in dining area. The extended tray can be filled with cracked corn, so your local squirrels can enjoy room and board without ever leaving the property.

We even added a window.

No plumbing. No Wi-Fi. Housekeeping is questionable.
But breakfast is included.

Throwback Thursday. Remember when that was a thing?

About four years ago, a neighbor was getting ready to move into a van and asked if I could build her a bench that could pull out into a bed.

So we came up with this.

The slats slide across one another, letting the whole thing collapse down to bench width during the day and pull out into a full bed at night.

And this was well before Steiner Ranch Sawdust—or even a garage full of tools. It was built on the back porch of an apartment with a jigsaw, a drill, and a sander.

Nothing fancy. Just a lot of pieces of wood, a lot of screws, and an unreasonable amount of measuring.

Apparently the whole “someone has an odd problem, let's see if we can build something” thing started a little earlier than we realized.

Still kind of proud of this one.

Sometimes a good design just needs a little tinkering.

We revisited one of our earlier covered bridge bird feeders and made a few changes.

The openings are larger, making it much easier to fill. We also added a support beam beneath the ridge cap, which means this version can either hang or be mounted on a post.

And it might make things a little harder on the squirrels.
We make no promises on that last part. Squirrels have engineering degrees and questionable ethics.

Still the same cedar construction and hand-cut shingled roof—just a better version of the original.

Restocking the bird feeders continues.

Because, despite what the squirrels may have led you to believe, we do occasionally serve other customers.

Today's addition is another cedar feeder, this time with arched sides and an individually cut cedar-shingle roof. Simple, open design with plenty of room for the neighborhood birds to stop by for lunch.

We'll get some tung oil on this one and let the cedar do the rest.

Built one at a time, not by the truckload.

Restocking bird feeders this week... because apparently we don't just cater to squirrels.

This one is made from cedar, finished with tung oil, and topped with individually cut cedar shingles. The tree-shaped supports give the birds plenty of room to come and go while giving us an excuse to make something a little more interesting than the standard bird feeder.

Because if we're going to build it, we might as well make it look cool.

Now this is how you show off a purchase.

One of our customers sent us a few photos of his Steiner Ranch Sawdust collection in its natural habitat. The lanterns have joined the Halloween welcoming committee, the planter is full and thriving, and the squirrel chair has been installed in what appears to be the penthouse suite.

We always enjoy seeing where our builds end up—especially when they’re put to better use than they ever were sitting in the shop.
