Seligman is a famous census-designated place in Yavapai County, northwestern Arizona, widely known as the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.”
Location: Sits at an elevation of 5,240 feet in a northern section of the Chino Valley, roughly an hour west of Flagstaff.
The Mother Road: After Interstate 40 bypassed Seligman in 1978, local barber Angel Delgadillo led efforts to save the town by helping establish the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona.Historic
Designation: In 1987, the state declared the stretch from Seligman to Kingman as Historic Route 66, sparking a nationwide revival of the highway.
Population: Around 450 to 800 residents depending on local census estimates.
Pixar’s Cars Inspiration: The town’s vintage neon signs, classic cars, and retro storefronts heavily inspired the fictional town of Radiator Springs in the Disney/Pixar movie Cars.
Members of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) served vital, highly classified administrative, technical, and support roles during the top-secret Manhattan Project.
General Leslie Groves requested a specialized female military force in 1943.
A formal WAC detachment for the Manhattan Project was established in June 1944.
Over 400 WAC personnel served across key project sites, including Oak Ridge (Tennessee), Los Alamos (New Mexico), and Hanford (Washington), as well as major urban hubs like New York and Chicago.
Candidates underwent strict, personal security interviews before selection due to the extreme sensitivity of the work.
