Our mission is to provide meaningful, insightful, and beneficial ways of experiencing nature on a frequent basis. With a focus on Baltimore, we hope to bring more nature into people's homes, businesses, schools and organizations. Through a partnership with the IUCN, purchasing our plants also supports the conservation of plants in the wild.

Sidewalk Repotting is back this Saturday from 10-1:30pm outside the shop 🪴! Bring up to 3 plants from home for repotting/plant care questions. No fee other than soil, and any pots purchased (or BYO pots!).

River birch (Betula nigra)
40–70 feet tall
40–60 feet spread
Characterized by attractive peeling, papery bark in shades of cinnamon and cream. Small, dark green, serrated leaves that turn yellow in fall. Best planted along stream banks, in swamps, and on flood plains
Beneficial to wildlife: provides food and shelter for birds such as nuthatches and Brown Creepers
Heat, flood, and drought tolerant once established
Blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica)
30–50 feet tall (can reach 75 feet in ideal conditions)
20–30 feet spread
Known for its brilliant scarlet, orange, and purple fall foliage. Glossy, dark green leaves and distinctive blocky bark on mature trees. Best planted in moist, well-drained soils but adaptable to a range of urban conditions. Beneficial to wildlife: flowers support pollinators, and fruits are eaten by songbirds, and other wildlife. Highly tolerant of drought once established and resistant to many pests and diseases
Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra)
60–75 feet tall
45–50 feet spread
Large, stately shade tree with broad, rounded canopy
Dark green leaves with pointed lobes that turn red to reddish-brown in fall. Best planted in well-drained soils in parks, yards, and urban landscapes. Beneficial to wildlife: acorns provide food for squirrels, deer, and many bird species. Tolerant of urban conditions, heat, and moderate drought once established

Without a doubt, enslaved Black Americans and their ancestors are responsible for the success and development of agriculture in the United States. Through cultivation, innovation, research, and leadership in botany and horticulture Black Americans have shaped the landscape of our country today.
We encourage you to read more about these important figures, seek out other leaders in the field, and find Black horticulturists working today to make our world more beautiful.

Nope, you don’t have to feed your carnivorous plant to keep it alive, but it does need sun! ☀️ Want to learn more? Join us at 6pm on 6/17 to make your own bog garden at our next workshop 😎
For carnivorous plants specifically, insects function much more like fertilizer than like food. 🪰
Carnivorous plants get nutrients from insects, but they don’t rely on them as their primary energy source. ☀️ That’s why a Venus flytrap can stay alive without catching prey if it gets enough light, whereas it cannot stay alive in the dark even if you feed it insects regularly. 🪴🦟
Once a month this summer we’re hosting flower arranging classes using 100% locally grown Maryland flowers! 🌼 💐🌸 Sunday, 6/28 at 1pm.
