At 56, Derrick Adams is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation, known for capturing the Black experience in vibrant, kaleidoscopic colors. Correspondent Nancy Giles talks with the artist about leaving his mark with his depictions of joyous scenes of everyday life. She also visits the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, home to a mid-career retrospective of Adams' art.

The agreement would bring together the most significant collection of 20th-century Austrian and German art outside Europe under a single institution—while preserving the Neue Galerie’s unique museum experience. Timed with the Neue Galerie’s 25th anniversary, the agreement marks a transformative step in preserving and advancing this extraordinary cultural legacy for future generations.

Congress has moved to give new life to a law meant to help families recover art stolen during the Holocaust, while at the same time reopening a long-running battle between heirs and the institutions that still hold those works.

The US House of Representatives on Monday approved an extension of the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery (HEAR) Act, a 2016 law designed to make it easier for victims’ descendants to bring restitution claims decades after the fact. The measure, which had already passed the Senate unanimously, now heads to President Donald Trump’s desk.

A Building Worthy of High Expectations

In 1848, Baltimore’s overwhelming support for the Maryland Institute made one thing clear: it needed a bigger home.

Rising above Center Market on Baltimore Street, the new Italianate building stretched an entire block and featured a soaring Great Hall — then the largest clear floor in America — capable of holding 6,000 people. Built on 650 steel pilings near the Jones Falls, it stood as a bold symbol of civic pride and belief in education, industry, and innovation.

When the cornerstone was laid on March 13, 1851, nearly 10,000 people filled the streets to witness the moment. Even after the Great Fire of 1904 destroyed the building, the cornerstone survived, a lasting reminder that the Institute was built on ambition, resilience, and high expectations.

Ronald Lauder, a powerful art collector who has patronized institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Trust, and the World Monuments Funds, appears more than 900 times in the set of Jeffrey Epstein–related files that were released by the Department of Justice at the end of January.
