I am completing my doctoral research study on Intergenerational Racial Trauma and Mental Health in Black Churches and am needing research participants. This study seeks to amplify the voices of current and past Black church leadership and parishioners with direct experience of Intergenerational Racial Trauma.

If you identify as a Black or African American adult, and are a current or former member of the Executive Leadership Team or Parishioner of any of the following Black churches, I would greatly appreciate your participation:

My commitment to preserving Black history and culture is deeply rooted in both my personal calling and my scholarly work. Through my dissertation research, I am honored to highlight the enduring legacy and impact of Black Churches: sacred spaces that have long stood as pillars of faith, resistance, and community empowerment.

One such church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, holds a profound place in both spiritual and civil rights history. Known as the home church of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ebenezer has long been a center for justice, advocacy, and transformative leadership. In 1974, the church experienced a tragic act of violence when Alberta Williams King was fatally shot while playing the organ during a Sunday service. This devastating moment shook the congregation and the nation.

Yet, even in the face of such profound loss, Ebenezer Baptist Church has not been defined by tragedy. Its legacy continues to reflect strength, faith, and an unwavering commitment to justice and community uplift. The church remains a beacon of hope and a living testament to the enduring power of Black faith institutions in shaping history and sustaining cultural resilience.

As I continue my dissertation journey, I look forward to sharing and uplifting stories like Ebenezer’s, stories that hold both grief and greatness, truth and triumph. Black Churches are more than places of worship; they are living archives of culture, resistance, and hope. It is both my responsibility and privilege to ensure their stories are preserved, honored, and shared.

Three Black churches in Indiana were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the National Park Service’s official list of the United States’ historic places worthy of preservation. Beulah AME Church & Dunbar School in Washington, Spruce Street AME Church in Terre Haute and St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis were recently added to this list earlier this month.
