Did you know howler monkeys have zero gum disease? Their secret lies in their diet, specifically cashew apples. Now, a company is freeze-drying these apples to create a concentrated extract. This extract is being turned into lozenges and toothpaste, offering a natural solution for human dental health.

Few things are more frustrating than being told something is happening inside your body, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

Luckily, inflammaging isn't a dead end.

The body’s inflammatory off-switch can get a little sluggish as we age. And unlike getting older, that responsiveness is something you can influence. Your sleep, stress, diet, and gut microbiome are all moving parts.

Which puts you in an empowering spot: you're not just a bystander to aging.

While it's tough to adjust something you can't see, it gets a whole lot easier once you know your starting point.

Discover how using salivary diagnostics can revolutionize patient education and lead to earlier disease detection. While insurance currently doesn't cover these tests, they save major medical carriers significant costs down the line by reducing instances of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. Finding oral cancer early is just one life-saving example.

Here's a sentence you don't get to write often: the man's memory got better by accident.

Medicine has a long history of these. Penicillin was a contaminated petri dish somebody didn't throw out. Vi**ra was a heart drug with a memorable side effect. The pattern is almost always the same: someone is looking at one thing, notices another, and the second thing turns out to matter more.

The catch is that accidents aren't evidence. For every one that opened a door, there are plenty that went nowhere and nobody wrote them down.

So the interesting part isn't what happened to him. It's what happened next, when researchers started asking whether it would happen again.

Dental and medical schools often skip over crucial oral health education. Physicians rarely learn about the mouth's link to overall health, missing a vital diagnostic area beyond just examining throats.

A diagnosis names the disease. It doesn't tell you where it came from.

On Episode 13 of Two PhDs on a Pod, Dr. Jeffrey Bland — President of Big Bold Health — walks through three things conventional medicine tends to miss about chronic disease:

1️⃣ Your blood pressure depends on more than your heart — it runs through your gut, your mouth, and your stomach acid, as one connected chain
2️⃣ By the time you have a diagnosis, you're already downstream. The earlier signals were there long before the label was.
3️⃣ Everyone eats — so why doesn't food come up in more appointments? It shapes every patient's outcome, and it's where root-cause thinking starts.

Dr. Bland's framing: functional medicine isn't a collection of therapies. It's a way of thinking — asking why an illness developed in this particular person, not just what to call it.

Brushing and flossing causing bleeding gums? You might think it's normal, but dentists want you to know it's a serious sign. Why is this common issue so often ignored? Your health depends on understanding this.
