Project Beetroot connects kids to healthy food in the garden, in the kitchen, and at the table. (Formerly Common Threads Farm) Stay Healthy. Stay Safe. Breathe.
Common Threads is a non-profit organization based in Bellingham, WA, located on the traditional ancestral lands of the Lummi and Nooksack peoples. In a typical year, Common Threads’ Americorps Food Educators spend the Fall and Spring leading gardening lessons in school gardens across Whatcom County, and the Winter leading cooking lessons with students in the classroom. We also typically offer Spring Break and Summer day camps at Western Washington University’s Outback Farm. As COVID-19 has impacted all of our lives in significant ways, we’ve had to make some pretty big shifts in how we serve our community and keep everyone safe. We’ve been proud to serve our community by supporting the Bellingham Public Schools Weekly Meal Distribution- we’ve grown and distributed more than 2,200 lbs of organic produce from our school gardens since April. We’ve also offered more than 2,273 hours of service in support of the Farm to Freezer program: a coordinated effort to purchase locally grown food products to provide vital income opportunities for farmers and to build inventory for food banks and hunger relief agencies to distribute during the post-harvest months. We’re proud to say we’ve prepared more than 37,000 quarts of soup with the Farm to Freezer Program. Our Food Educators have been leading in-person COVID-safe garden lessons and providing meal support to students in the Bellingham Connections Program. Food Educators have also been offering Zoom Cooking Classes on a pay-what-you-can basis that allow kids and their families to cook a meal at home featuring vegetables. Finally, we’ve continued to build a culture of equity both within our organization and in our community- we know that food access and education cannot be discussed without considering the legacy of racism that we are long overdue in addressing in every aspect of society. We recognize that food insecurity disproportionately impacts communities of color and we are committed to learning how we can continue to support the efforts of our community in combating these complex issues. In these unusual times, the question we continue to ask ourselves is a simple one: how can we help? Answers will continue to emerge and we will continue to offer updates as they do. Smile. Common Threads Farm is now Project Beetroot!
Earlier this year, we shared that we were preparing for a new name—one that better reflects who we are today and the future we’re growing toward.
While our name is changing, what we do and why we do it are not. Our mission, programs, people, and commitment to helping kids build joyful connections with food and nature remain at the heart of our work.
So, why Project Beetroot?
Project reflects the work we do together: hands-on, collaborative, creative, and always evolving. It’s about bringing people together to build something meaningful, with room for new ideas and possibilities.
And Beetroot? The beet has been part of our visual story since the beginning. It represents food, growing, gardens, nourishment, and the joy of getting your hands in the dirt. And root speaks to something deeper: connection, belonging, and the strong foundations that help us grow.
After 20 years of growing good eaters, we’re excited to grow into this next chapter with you.

We had to say goodbye to our trusty old Prius this winter. 253,000 miles is a lot and we're thankful for all the memories she helped us make in classrooms and gardens, from Sumas to Lummi Nation to Bellingham.
The story of how we got this vehicle is a true story of what our friends at call salmon love, which means basically being generous always, like the fish that have fed our bioregion since time immemorial. We were so thankful to receive this vehicle just when we needed her most. Thank you, Team Nerka, for always looking out for your community! But all good things must come to an end, and we used the Cars for Homes program to benefit to give her one last good deed.
It turns out that this Prius was basically our dream car. High passenger capacity, high hauling capacity, and excellent gas mileage? Yes please! If you or someone you know loves what we do and is looking to give a community org a good deal or donate such a vehicle, ideally with a bit less than 250k miles, please let us know.
