Neonatal Kidney Collaborative
Improving the health of newborns with or at risk for kidney disease through multidisciplinary collaborative research, advocacy, and education.
𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬
The NKC was established in 2013 after a National Institutes of Health (NIH) multidisciplinary workshop on neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI) to address knowledge gaps highlighted at the workshop. The initial working group was composed of a neonatologists and pediatric nephrologist from 24 different international centers. The first mission of the NKC was to develop, organize and perform the AWAKEN (Assessment of Worldwide Acute Kidney Injury) study. Given the success of the AWAKEN study, early in 2019 the NKC re-organized, expanded and now has the below organizational plans.
𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡
The vision of the NKC is to reduce the global burden of kidney disease by improving neonatal kidney health through the (1) promotion of high quality research that expands the boundaries of detection and management of kidney disease in vulnerable infants, (2) development and dissemination of best practice clinical guidelines, and (3) establishment of consultative and educational resources for practitioners, trainees, and families.
𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡
The NKC's mission is to improve the health of newborns with or at risk for kidney disease through multidisciplinary collaborative research, advocacy, and education.
𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗘𝗦
The NKC promotes rigorous, collaborative research, strong mentorship with networking opportunities, and sustainability of the organization through collegiality, inclusiveness, transparency, efficiency and productivity.

When caring for infants with NEC, attention to kidney health is critical.
The connection between necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and acute kidney injury (AKI) highlights how closely organ systems work together in vulnerable newborns. Recognizing kidney injury early and understanding its impact may help improve both short- and long-term outcomes.
At the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative, we are committed to advancing awareness, research, and education surrounding neonatal kidney health and its connection to conditions like NEC.

🩵💛 As NEC Awareness Month comes to a close, the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative is proud to join the NEC Society in raising awareness about necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
NEC is a devastating intestinal disease that primarily affects premature and medically fragile infants. It can progress rapidly, remains a leading cause of death in premature infants, and may have lifelong consequences for survivors and their families.
While May is coming to an end, the need for awareness, research, education, and advocacy continues year-round. By working together, we can help advance understanding of NEC and improve outcomes for vulnerable newborns and their families.
Together, we can help build a world without NEC.
Thank you to .society for their leadership and dedication to families affected by NEC.

Last night, we gathered on Boston Harbor for our 2026 NKC dinner—an incredible evening with an even more incredible community.
There’s something special about being together in person—connecting, sharing stories, and celebrating the friendships that come from a shared commitment to improving kidney care for babies and children. We were also proud to recognize this year’s NKC Award recipients.
Grateful for the energy, the connection, and the momentum this community continues to build. 💙

A Journey of Resilience: Cash 🩵
After a complicated birth, Cash faced hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a kidney injury, seizures, and even heart failure in his first weeks of life.
Today, he’s a thriving, adventurous four-year-old who loves being outside, playing with friends, and especially loves dinosaurs and swimming.
