All set up at the Senior Lifestyle Expo in Boise today!

I’m here representing Breakthrough Personal Training and sharing something I care deeply about: helping adults move better, feel stronger, and maintain their independence as they age.

From beginner-friendly strength training to accessible mobility programs, my goal is to help people build confidence in what their bodies can do—starting wherever they are today.

If you’re at the expo, stop by and say hello! I’d love to hear what staying active and independent means to you.

Seated Abs, Part 2: three new moves you can do from a chair.

If getting down on the floor isn’t comfortable for you, you can still practice controlled movement and work your core while seated. Take these slowly, sit tall, and move through a range that feels good for your body.

Missed the first three moves? Go back and check out Part 1, then save both videos for a beginner-friendly seated core routine.

Two chair-supported moves for your glutes, hamstrings, balance, and hip mobility.

For the first move, I lean forward while holding the chair, extend one leg behind me, then bend that leg and bring my knee forward. I move back and forth slowly, keeping the motion controlled.

For the second, I hold the chair and extend a straight leg behind me. After each rep, I briefly lift my hands from the chair before holding on again for the next rep. That little pause adds a balance challenge—but keep your hands on the chair if you need the support.

These are great moves to practice if you want to feel stronger and steadier in everyday life. Start with a small, comfortable range and use a sturdy chair that won’t slide.

Save this one to try later, and find more beginner-friendly strength and mobility workouts through the link in my bio.

A chair can be one of the best tools for building lower-body strength and confidence.

In this beginner-friendly workout, I’m using it four ways:

1. Holding the chair for balance during a single-leg Romanian deadlift with a dumbbell
2. Holding the chair with both hands for supported squats
3. Placing my heels on the chair for hip thrusts
4. Stepping each leg up and over the seat to practice controlled hip movement

These moves help you work on the strength and mobility you use to stand up, walk, and move through your day. Take your time, use a range that feels comfortable, and choose a sturdy chair that won’t slide.

You don’t have to start with perfect balance. Start with support and build from there.

Limited hip mobility? Start right from the chair.

In this drill, I’m demonstrating two ways to circle the leg around a cone:

🔵 On my right side, I keep my foot flat as I guide the leg around the cone. This provides more contact with the floor and allows you to practice the movement with greater support and control.

🔵 On my left side, I lift my heel and pivot around the toe. This allows the foot to turn more freely as the hip moves through the circle and may feel more comfortable for someone with limited hip rotation.

Neither variation has to be “better.” Try both and use the option that allows you to move smoothly without forcing your hip or twisting through your knee.

This seated exercise can help improve active hip mobility, coordination, and control—qualities that support walking, climbing stairs, stepping over objects, and getting in and out of a car.

The Tribe Buckle Band adds light resistance to activate the muscles surrounding the hips. It’s also easy to put on: simply wrap it above your knees and buckle it into place—no pulling a tight loop band over your shoes.

Start with 6–10 slow circles on each side, sit tall, and keep the movement within a comfortable range.

Find the buckle band under “Tools I Use” through the link in my bio or visit CoachMrPhill.com.

Strong glutes do much more than change how your body looks—they help support your hips, stabilize your pelvis, protect your lower back, and make everyday movement easier.

This single-leg hip thrust adds an extra mobility and control challenge. As I drive through the planted foot and lift my hips, the straight leg rises toward the ceiling.

This movement helps develop:

🔵 Glute strength on the working side
🔵 Hip mobility in the moving leg
🔵 Core and pelvic stability
🔵 Better single-leg control
🔵 Strength that carries over to walking, climbing stairs, and getting up from a chair

Focus on moving slowly, keeping your hips level, and squeezing the glute at the top. Quality matters more than height.

Start with 6–10 controlled repetitions on each side. If this version is too challenging, begin with a standard two-leg hip thrust.

Strong hips help you move better today—and stay independent tomorrow.

Save this one for your next lower-body or mobility session. For more beginner-friendly mobility and strength programs, visit the programs in my bio.

Your hips need more than flexibility—they also need the ability to rotate.

For this stick-assisted hip mobility move, I’m lying on my back with my knees bent and using the stick to gently guide my leg through internal and external rotation.

This controlled movement can help:

✔ Improve hip rotation
✔ Reduce stiffness around the hips and glutes
✔ Build better control through the joint
✔ Support smoother walking, squatting, and everyday movement

Move slowly and stay within a comfortable range. The goal is to guide the hip—not force it.

If tight hips are limiting how you move, my Hip Mobility Breakthrough programs provide simple routines you can practice at home. Visit coachmrphill.co/mobility to learn more.

Here are 3 beginner-friendly seated core exercises you can do right from a chair.

These are great for anyone who is just getting started, has limited mobility, isn't comfortable getting up and down from the floor, or simply wants another way to strengthen their core.

And remember—your core isn't just about getting abs.

A stronger core can help support:

🔹 Better posture
🔹 Balance & stability
🔹 Everyday movement
🔹 Better body control
🔹 Getting up, walking, bending and reaching with more confidence

The goal isn't to move as fast as possible.

Slow down. Control each repetition. Feel your core doing the work.

Start with 8–10 controlled reps of each exercise, rest when needed, and gradually build from there.

Your starting point doesn't matter nearly as much as starting and staying consistent.

You can get stronger at ANY level.

This seated hip rotation movement trains internal and external hip mobility while challenging your control, coordination, and core stability.

Move slowly, use your hands for support, and stay within a comfortable range. Don’t force your knees toward the floor.

Try 2 sets of 8–10 controlled reps—especially after prolonged sitting or before lower-body activity.

Your body doesn’t always need more intensity. Sometimes it needs better movement preparation.

STIFF HIPS? DON’T IGNORE HIP ROTATION.

Your hips need more than forward-and-back movement—they also need the ability to rotate comfortably.

For this movement, sit tall with your hands behind you for support, knees bent, and heels on the mat. Gently lower one knee inward toward the floor, return to the starting position, and repeat on the opposite side.

This controlled movement can help improve:

• Internal hip rotation
• Hip mobility and control
• Comfort during walking and everyday movement
• Lower-body coordination
• Your ability to move, bend, and turn more freely

Keep both heels grounded, move slowly, and only lower your knee as far as it can comfortably go. The goal isn’t to force the knee to touch the floor—it’s to help your hip gradually move better.

Consistent mobility work can make a meaningful difference in how your entire lower body feels and functions.
