Plus Or Minus is a creative project where instrumental indie rock meets visual storytelling. Based in Boston, MA, the project is built around the musical partnership of guitarist Eliot Hunt (Chauncey / Kristin Cifelli) and multi-instrumentalist Jon Bistline (Chauncey / Session Americana), and drummer Mike Piehl (Expanding Man/Reverse/Township), blending dynamic interplay, layered textures, and cinematic soundscapes. For their first recording, Signal, the duo enlisted drummer Mike Piehl (Expanding Man / Reverse) to complete the new trio. The music for this record evolved from sketches that Eliot and Jon had written over the years, slowly taking shape through a process of experimentation and refinement. In August 2024, the trio entered Dimension Sound Studios in Jamaica Plain, MA, to track the five-song record over the course of just two days. With only a handful of rehearsals under their belts, the musicians found themselves shaping the music in real-time, capturing both the immediacy of improvisation and the intentionality of composition over a fixed period of time. Signal is, at its core, the sound of three seasoned musicians learning to play together—both with each other and with the material—resulting in an intimate yet expansive sonic landscape. Each self-produced release is an opportunity to collaborate with visual artists, forging deep connections between sound and imagery. For Signal, Rhode Island-based collage artist Sarah Short designed the album’s striking artwork, while New Mexico-based animator DustyDeen brought the track Mog, Why? to life with hand-crafted animations. At its heart, Plus Or Minus is really about community—a space where musicians and visual artists come together to create something bigger than the sum of its parts. Whether through records, videos, or live shows, the goal remains the same: to make music you can see and art you can hear.

Our new video for "That Thing We Talked About" is out now - and it's the first taste of Binary, our new EP, available everywhere you stream music.
We've spent a lot of years making music with other people, for other projects, in other rooms. Plus Or Minus is the part where we finally make it for ourselves: instrumental, open-ended, no lyrics telling you what to feel - just sound, and room for your own story. Binary is the fullest version of that idea we've managed yet.
The video was shot at Q Division in Cambridge by Jacob Kleinberg, who got what we were going for immediately and made something we're genuinely proud of. The song was recorded by Matt Tahaney. Both of them made this better than it had any right to be.
If you've got a few minutes and a decent pair of headphones, we'd love for you to watch, listen, and tell us what you think. That last part is kind of the whole point.

It’s been a minute since we’ve checked in and realized it was high time we said hello.
