Hypertension remains a major driver of cardiovascular disease and preventable illness in the United States. To address this, HRSA awarded JSI a contract to accelerate the adoption of Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) monitoring in HRSA-funded health centers.

In partnership with Arbor Research, the Accelerating Chronic Disease Management Through SMBP and Community Wellness project will provide structured virtual technical assistance, practical implementation resources, and evaluation support to 30–50 health centers.

This project’s approach will draw from JSI’s experience implementing more than 100 primary care-focused projects and 11 years of providing national technical assistance through the Health Information Technology, Evaluation, and Quality (HITEQ) Center. Bringing essential care directly to local communities Improving health outcomes often requires practical, on-the-ground support. This issue highlights a few recent JSI projects doing just that, from accelerating routine hypertension monitoring in U.S. health centers to improving village-led maternal care in Ethiopia.

Billions of vaccine doses are lost globally every year due to disruptions in the cold chain. While installing state-of-the-art cold storage is vital, a resilient health care system requires the local capacity to maintain, adapt, and manage that infrastructure over time.

In , JSI and the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS) turned routine warehouse reorganizations into a hands-on training ground, strengthening local engineering capacity while optimizing supply lines for over 32 million people across three key hubs. This " learning while doing" model established a national maintenance protocol to safeguard Ethiopia's health supply chain for the long term. Building Lasting Self-Reliance in Vaccine Infrastructure Teaching while doing, JSI worked to achieve sustainable self-reliance to safeguard Ethiopia’s cold chain.

Between 2010 and 2023, 641 hospital labor and delivery units closed across the U.S. In Colorado, 40% of counties are now designated as maternity care deserts. A study conducted by JSI for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment found that birth facility closures shift obstetric emergencies to local emergency departments and EMS teams that often lack specialized equipment and labor and delivery training.

Following the study, we authored a legislative report with recommendations to strengthen the state's perinatal system, including standardized funding for emergency training, transfer protocols, and regional consultation networks.
