🚨🇪🇹 ETHIOPIA’S WAR ESCALATES: HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS CONFLICT?

Tensions in Ethiopia have escalated again, with fighting reported in Tigray and surrounding areas, including parts of Amhara and Afar.

The renewed conflict comes as seven armed groups have formed a new alliance that they say aims to challenge Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. The alliance reportedly includes the TPLF, Amhara Fano National Movement, and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), along with other armed groups.

The situation is particularly sensitive in Afar, which is strategically important because it connects Ethiopia to Djibouti and the Red Sea. Ethiopia relies heavily on the Djibouti corridor for imports and exports, making any disruption there potentially significant for the country’s economy.

Ethiopia has also accused Eritrea of supporting armed groups involved in the conflict. Eritrea has denied such allegations, and the extent of any direct involvement remains disputed.

The current crisis comes after the devastating 2020–2022 Tigray War. Although the Pretoria Agreement ended the major fighting, several political, territorial and security disputes remained unresolved.

What makes the current situation particularly important is the possibility that fighting could spread beyond Tigray and further threaten key routes linking Ethiopia with Djibouti.

The major questions now are whether the conflict will expand toward the Ethiopia–Djibouti corridor, how deeply Eritrea may become involved, and whether the newly formed armed alliance can maintain coordination despite having different political and regional interests.

If the fighting continues to spread, the consequences could extend beyond Ethiopia, affecting security, trade and stability across the Horn of Africa.
