MY FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER HAD BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT NAUSEA AND STOMACH PAIN. MY HUSBAND SAID, “SHE’S JUST PRETENDING. DON’T WASTE TIME OR MONEY.” I TOOK HER TO THE HOSPITAL WITHOUT TELLING HIM. THE DOCTOR STUDIED THE SCAN AND MUTTERED, “THERE’S SOMETHING INSIDE HER…” I COULD ONLY SCREAM.
I had sensed something wasn’t right long before anyone else bothered to pay attention. For weeks, my fifteen-year-old daughter, Hailey, had been dealing with nausea, stabbing pains in her stomach, dizziness, and a heavy exhaustion that didn’t match the girl who once lived for soccer, photography, and late-night talks with her friends. But recently, she barely said a word. She kept her hoodie pulled up even inside the house and flinched whenever someone asked how she was doing.
My husband, Mark, brushed it all off. “She’s just pretending,” he said firmly. “Teenagers overreact to everything. Don’t waste time or money on doctors.” He spoke with a cold certainty that shut down any chance of arguing.

When the door finally opened, Dr. Adler walked in with a serious expression. He held a clipboard tightly, as if the information on it carried more weight than it should.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said softly, “we need to talk.”
Hailey sat beside me on the exam table, shaking.
Dr. Adler lowered his voice. “The scan shows that there is something inside her.”

“Inside her?” I repeated, struggling to get the words out. “What do you mean?”
