Dancing Feats
Weekly classes, monthly social dancing, and a whole lot of fun ππΊ
~West Coast Swing ~
We see it every single class- and here's how to skip it:
Taking your time is the most underrated way to actually feel comfortable sooner as a beginner WCS dancer β³
You don't have to try to do everything all at once and you're not being graded- we promise. Take a breath and let yourself slow down. Focus on one thing at a time until it starts to feel natural; here are some ideas:
π Timing (walk, walk, triple step, triple step)
π Which direction you're stepping (forwards, backwards, left, or right)
π Keeping your arms active but not tight
π Holding your partner's hand comfortably
π Stepping right underneath yourself
The less you try to do at once, the more you'll be able to actually dance and have fun instead of internally panicking π«ͺ

3 questions to ask yourself after every social dance to get better faster- because competitions aren't the only reason to improve π
Whether or not you use social dancing as active practice time, it can still provide lots of useful insights into how your skills are progressing. Make sure to save these questions so you don't forget, and follow along for more social-focused tips!
The social floor mistake we see intermediate dancers make most often:
Lacking patience; in their steps, connection, and movement through space. It throws off your timing, keeps you from accessing more complex pattern work, and shuts down the partnership.
What can you practice to fix it?
π Rolling through your feet- this takes up time, which helps your slow down
π Regulating your step size- hold a tennis/lacrosse ball between your thighs so that your steps stay underneath you and all roughly the same size
π Stepping on time- play a song while you brush your teeth and practice your walk/walk/triple/triple (your dentist will also appreciate it)
π Calm mindset- it's just dance, not a race, so allow yourself to slow down and enjoy the journey
Hope this helps your next practice session, stick around for more WCS tips!
Chilling at home? Standing in line at the grocery store? Lock in, it's drill time π€
Simple body awareness exercises like rolling out your ankles and taking slow steps don't need much floor space or time at all, but they do need consistent reps. The more often you place your attention on these simple details, the more automatic they become.
Challenge yourself or your practice partner: how many body awareness reps can you get in this weekend?
